About this listen

What do Catholics and Protestants believe about the Bible? Where do they agree and disagree? Catholics believe that: “God is the author of Sacred Scripture because he inspired its human authors; he acts in them and by means of them. He thus gives assurance that their writings teach without error his saving truth.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 136) Many Protestants share this same belief. Yet, differences emerge with respect to the doctrine of the rule of faith — the standard by which individuals interpret difficult passages of the Bible. Louis-Nazaire Cardinal Bégin (1840-1925) explores these differences, and their natural consequences, in The Bible and the Rule of Faith. Expressing the desires of his heart as he published this work, Cardinal Bégin said he wished to show courtesy to others, hoped to answer certain charges against the Church, and prayed with Jesus that all who believe in Christ would be one. (John 17:20-23) Catholicism
