In this concluding book of Adrian McKinty's highly praised Dead series, Michael Forsythe confronts his former lover and archrival, Bridget, a New York Irish Mob boss.

Michael has survived his infiltration of an IRA splinter cell in Boston, and now, his many near fatal wounds healed, he begins his next adventure as manager of hotel security in Lima, Peru. It is there that he is contacted by Bridget, whose fiancé he killed.

Bridget, calling from Dublin, says that her 11-year-old daughter has been kidnapped. Michael's choice is to fly to Dublin and help her find the girl, or be executed at the hands of Bridget's goons, who are holding him at gunpoint. He agrees to nothing, but is soon on the way to Dublin, leaving the first two of many dead bodies in his wake.

Some readers were put off by the slow and seemingly meandering route McKinty took in "Dead I Well..." I really missed it in this third (and final?) book in the series.

At his best this writer knows how to keep the tension high and draw us steadily onward by feeding our imagination with telling details of his character's inner life along with near poetic observations of a fascinating and always dangerous external setting. His skill at creating convincing and gripping action sequences is unquestionable, but it is what leads us to those moments--the uncertainty, the wry and even painful humor, the ambiguity of relationship, and the constant tension between the wise calculation and the compelling need to ignore it--which keeps us fascinated and completely engaged and which defines McKinty's wonderful talent.

This foray into the deadline-driven, action thriller neutralized those strengths and reduced the whole thing to a long and far less original series of set piece confrontations. By the end they become so predictable and unconvincing that I no longer recognized the writing I had loved so much when it introduced me to this unlikely, conflicted and oh-so-human protagonist.

Adrian McKinty is in a league of his own with a tight plot and rich characters. Gerard Doyle is my number one reader for accents, drama, and pace. Don’t pass this book up!

It all started with "Dead I May Well Be," followed by "The Dead Yard," McKinty's first two installments of the Michael Forsythe series. This one is the best of all with such amazing thrilling twists and turns. As I've noted before in reviews of McKinty's novels, Gerard Doyle is nothing short of narration-perfection. McKinty's descriptive prose and Doyle's interpretations of characters are stunning. To me, listening to his books is purely poetic.

That is not to suggest that they are without lots of foul language and over the top blood and gore. The crimes and criminals are horrific throughout. Yet, the reader's relationship with Michael keeps us listening, hoping, knowing that somehow, he is going to come out of all this in one way of the other.

Read the series. If you love crime thrillers, these enchanting stories of an Irish lad gone bad will capture your imagination for certain!

Hang on for a Terrific Ride! McKinty is a Master!

He is perhaps the best in his genre today. Although my favorite series is his Sean Duffy one - brilliant - I really enjoyed this book, his last of the Michael Forsythe series. It isn't as dark as the previous 2. And Doyle, of course, brings him to life like no other narrator could.
Don't think twice, go for it and don't forget the Sean Duffy series. Pure delight. Pure Irish poetry and humor, even when it turns brutal.

I loved this series from beginning to end. The author tells this story well and the character is likeable. The narrator does and excellent job as well.

I love Adrian McKintys books so I followed this series happily. This one is quick and thrilling. It jumps from violence and profanity to some laugh out loud moments.

Back in Northern Ireland, McKintys detail and research is a fascinating backdrop to a brutal battle of wills between two long time rivals. The story held me all the way to the end which was weird but somehow fitting.

The narration was as always flawless. Gerard Doyle makes these audio books for me.

Some humour, mostly quite dark with some extreme bits of violence appropriate to the plot.
