About this listen

Prepare to fall under the spell of “this sometimes whimsical, often insightful, always absorbing story” (Shelf Awareness) following two fiercely independent women and their truly magical friendship in a sleepy Southern town, from New York Times best-selling author of Karen Hawkins.

Sarah Dove is no ordinary bookworm. To her, books live, breathe, and sometimes even speak. As the librarian in her quaint Southern town of Dove Pond, her gift helps place every book in the hands of the perfect reader. Recently, however, the books have been whispering about something out of the ordinary: the arrival of a displaced city girl named Grace Wheeler. If the books are right, Grace could be the savior Dove Pond desperately needs.

The problem is, Grace wants little to do with the town or its quirky residents — Sarah chief among them. But with a bit of urging, and the help of an especially wise book, will Grace ultimately embrace the challenge to rescue her charmed new community?

“A mesmerizing fusion of the mystical and the everyday” (Susan Andersen, New York Times best-selling author), The Book Charmer is a heartwarming story about the magic of books that feels more than a little magical itself.

What listeners say about The Book Charmer

Highly rated for:

The Story Revolves Around The Small Town Of Dove Pond And Its Quirky Residents, Particularly The Dove Family Who Have A Magical Connection With Books. Sarah Dove, The Town's Librarian, Has The Ability To Hear Books Talking And Intuitively Know Which Book Someone Needs To Read. While The Premise Of The "book Charmer" Is Intriguing, The Story Meanders Into Other Plotlines Like A Grouchy Woman Planning A Town Festival And Dealing With A Loved One's Dementia. Many Reviewers Found The Story Charming And Heartwarming, With Its Well-developed Characters And Touch Of Magical Realism. However, Others Felt The Pacing Was Slow, Certain Storylines Were Underdeveloped Or Unresolved, And The Title Was Misleading As Sarah's Gift Was Not The Main Focus. Overall, It Explores Themes Of Small-town Life, Family Bonds, Love, Friendship, Books, Dementia, And A Sprinkle Of Magic.

A warm cozy Feel-Good Read

I love the Dove Pond Series and hope for many, more very soon. There are so many characters with stories of their own just waiting to be told!

charming

A book as charming as it's name. A light, happy read. Narration was good, except for the voice of "Grace". I thought the voice didn't fit the character's personality, although the narrator did a fine job. Very likable characters.

The Book charmer!

This was such a sweet book. The characters were unique and varied. Grace and her niece Daisy and foster mother move to Dove Pond so Grace can start a new job as town clerk! Mama G is starting to suffer from Alzheimers. Grace is over qualified and aloof! Only planning to stay one year. Sarah Dove hears books that talk to her. The books say that Grace must stay. She is important to the town. So the magic of these two women begins. This is the beginning of a new series by Karen Hawkins. I loved the story and the narrators.

Strong story awesome narrator.

I found this story because I love Amanda Ronconi. I stayed because the story while tedious in parts mirrors my life at the moment. I loved this book because it spoke to me. I’m in the middle of losing my difficult mother to a miserable disease. While the circumstances aren’t the same I saw enough of my life in it I laughed as much as I cried. Thank you for this book it was a balm in ways I can’t ever express.

Beautiful in its simplicity.

Light, airy and sometimes heart breaking. I could feel the pain, laugh at the satire and hope for the future .

Enjoyable story

I really enjoyed this story and the characters in this book. It’s not a classic just a fun read with characters you wish you knew and a town you would like to live in.
