About this listen

The Instant New York Times Best Seller!

“Sublime ... Colgan infuses her latest book with humor, wit, suspense and a perfectly cast love triangle.” (USA Today)

"The Christmas Bookshop is literary hot chocolate with a bourbon shot: hot, sweet but with a surprising emotional kick." (The Times (UK))

Perfect for the holidays! A brand-new heartwarming Christmas novel from the beloved New York Times best-selling author of The Bookshop on the Corner and Christmas at the Island Hotel.

Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life, does not appeal.

Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there, either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

Thrown rather suddenly into the inner workings of Mr. McCredie’s ancient bookshop on the picturesque streets of historic Edinburgh, Carmen is intrigued despite herself. The store is dusty and disorganized, but undeniably charming. Can she breathe some new life into it in time for Christmas shopping? What will happen when a famous and charismatic author takes a sudden interest in the bookshop - and Carmen? And will the Christmas spirit be enough to help heal her fractured family?

terrible narration

I really wanted to enjoy this book but I couldn't get past the terrible narration. The narrator makes the lead characters sound like petulant teenagers and it's just awful. I can't say anything about the story itself as I had only gotten a few chapters in, but I ended up having to return the book.

TERRIFIC!

Just the little Christmas story you’re looking for! Fun, sweet, laugh out loud funny at times. The narrator was perfect for the characters and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her change from one person to the next. Highly recommend!

Sweet story

I loved the story. Normally I love Eilidh’s narration. However, for the first half of the book, her voice for Carmen was extremely shrill and grating. Fortunately, that toned down as the story progressed. Also, I wonder how someone from a small town i and to have a working class Lo don accent.

Fun and heartwarming

A fun story, but not your typical cute romance. The main character is a bit cynical and though her heart warms over time, it’s not overly mushy or out of character. I really enjoyed it!

Another delightful story fro Jenny Colgan!

I love the joyousness of Colgan’s stories. There is something bright about them all! The characters are ones you look forward to visiting again, and I couldn’t wait to get back to the story! I also love the cameos by characters from her other stories. Nicely done!

Family Relationships

As a romance this is middling, but as a study of family dynamics, sisterly relationships, and personal growth, this is a wonderful novel. You don't have to be a fan of the genre to appreciate the well-rounded characters, the personal character arcs, and the fine writing. The interplay between the kids is particularly believable and relatable.
Eilidh Beaton does a great job of delineating the characters, from kids to adults, male and female alike.
