About this listen

Often called the "Father of Church History", Eusebius was the first to trace the rise of Christianity during its crucial first three centuries from Christ to Constantine. Our principal resource for earliest Chrisitianity, The Church History presents a panorama of apostles, church fathers, emperors, bishops, heroes, heretics, confessors, and martyrs.

This audiobook edition includes Paul L. Maier's clear and precise translation, historical commentary on each book in The Church History, and numerous maps, illustrations, and photographs. These features promise to liberate Eusebius from previous outdated and stilted works, creating a new standard primary resource for listeners interested in the early history of Christianity.

A convenient primer.

While the material is dry, and the narrator does not differentiate well between quotes of Eusebius and commentaries by the author, this is still a worthy primer on church history.

it's Worth Your Time, but...

The content is solid (if you can handle a modern editor cutting out what he considered redundancies or undue embellishments) but listen carefully, because the editor's critical commentary is rather often inserted during the reading, and always without due verbal notice.

Great, Difficult to follow in audio.

The reader is great! But the format makes it difficult to determine if he is reading Eusebius, or commentary by Maier. There’s no heading (e.g “Footnote:…”) and sometimes no break at Al between notes and the text. The extremely long quotes Eusebius uses are difficult enough to keep up with. You get used to it, and can figure it out by the tone of the language, but I was pretty lost for the first third of the book there.

A must read for all Christians in this day and age

A great historical accounting of the early church and the adversities the body had undergone. Every Christian in this century should make reading this book a priority.

excellent history

It's a great book but due to all the quoting of quotes and various footnotes it's easy to get lost in what's being read. A printed version to reference is a must.

Heartbreakingly thorough

An incredible, sometimes first-hand, account of the earliest times in the Church following the Crucifixion of Christ. I was shocked and humbled to learn the breadth of persecution that took place. Eusebius records names, dates, methods...I was not prepared for such detail, having been taught very little about the extent of persecution. It is a sobering history that reveals that today's Christian got here on the bones of real faith.

Great work ruined by poor footnote distinction

It would have been really easy to make a distinction between footnotes and the main text, simply by having two different narrators with distinct voices, or some sound cues to mark the beginning and end of a footnote. The way it is, listening becomes very burdensome, cause I'm always having to make a strong effort to notice the difference. Noticing it is pretty important, since it affects how one understands the historical information being conveyed. I'm baffled by how the producers could miss such an obvious problem.
