About this listen

A MILESTONE IN HISTORICAL MYSTERY FICTION AS MAISIE DOBBS TAKES HER FINAL BOW

London, 1945: Four adolescent orphans with a dark wartime history are squatting in a vacant Belgravia mansion—the owners having fled London under heavy Luftwaffe bombing. Psychologist and Investigator Maisie Dobbs visits the mansion on behalf of the owners and discovers that a demobilized soldier, gravely ill and reeling from his experiences overseas, has taken shelter with the group.

Maisie’s quest to bring comfort to the youngsters and the ailing soldier brings to light a decades-old mystery concerning Maisie’s first husband, James Compton, who was killed while piloting an experimental fighter aircraft. As Maisie unravels the threads of her dead husband’s life, she is forced to examine her own painful past and question beliefs she has always accepted as true.

The award-winning Maisie Dobbs series has garnered hundreds of thousands of followers, audiences drawn to a woman who is of her time, yet familiar in ours—and who inspires with her resilience and capacity for endurance. This final assignment of her own choosing not only opens a new future for Maisie and her family, but serves as a fascinating portrayal of the challenges facing the people of Britain at the close of the Second World War.

Never let me down! Awesome consistency through series.

Her Maisie Dobbs books have all managed to stand alone while still carrying a story forward … once I started I read everything in order (before I had audible starting in about 2015.) This last book was a longtime coming but I loved that she tied every major event in so skillfully and it all made sense! Did not seem forced at all. Her characters age and mature and change enough to make their actions realistic at every stage. I’m
In awe of her skill and talent and perseverance. Hoping she will keep writing and curious what she is developing or interested in doing. And I wonder if a really good TV series is in the works. I hope so!

Wonderful! I’m so sad it’s the last one, but it ended on just the right note.

The baby gimmick was a bit too much

The main story line was intriguing and made one think of how life was at the end of the war, especially for the young who were abandoned.

I love this series and have listed/read it many times, so when the gender of Maisie's baby went from a girl to a boy in a contrivance, it was annoying and did not add to the story line. In fact, I think it detracted from it.

Everything else was engaging and a bit bittersweet. I will miss all the characters if this is indeed goodbye. I do wonder what happened to Pascale, Francesca Thomas and, as mentioned by others, DI Stratton. In fact, I would love to see a series of book about Francesca Thomas.

Maise ties up all the loose ends!

I appreciated Ms Winspear ending on a sad but hopeful note. Maise faces the end of the war with a forward looking attitude.
