GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK

Nothing to lose. Everything to gain. Winner takes all.

“Every bit as addictive as your favorite guilty pleasure binge-watch, but with all the substance of a literary classic.”—Oprah Daily

“It’s fun to watch hot people do psychotic things in this novel. . . . Smart and provocative [and] so damn addictive.”—The New York Times Book Review

ONE THE BOOKS OF THE SUMMER: The New York Times, Vulture, Time, Harper’s Bazaar, Good Housekeeping, Forbes, Betches, Publishers Weekly

Lily—a bored, beautiful twenty-something—wakes up on a remote desert compound, alongside nineteen other contestants competing on a massively popular reality show. To win, she must outlast her housemates to stay in the Compound the longest, while competing in challenges for luxury rewards like champagne and lipstick, plus communal necessities to outfit their new home, like food, appliances, and a front door.

Cameras are catching all her angles, good and bad, but Lily has no desire to leave: why would she, when the world outside is falling apart? As the competition intensifies, intimacy between the players deepens, and it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between desire and desperation. When the unseen producers raise the stakes, forcing contestants into upsetting, even dangerous situations, the line between playing the game and surviving it begins to blur. If Lily makes it to the end, she’ll receive prizes beyond her wildest dreams—but what will she have to do to win?

Addictive and prescient, The Compound is an explosive debut from a major new voice in fiction and will linger in your mind long after the game ends.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“A disorienting view of a world that doesn’t seem too far removed from how we are already living—trapped between the desire for connection and the impulse to only look out for ourselves.”—Vulture

“It’s fun to watch hot people do psychotic things in this novel. . . . Smart and provocative [and] so damn addictive . . . The Compound joins a budding genre of fiction that uses disturbing televised competitions to critique our social norms, including Chain-Gang All-Stars and The Hunger Games. . . . Thrilling and haunting.”—The New York Times Book Review

“An Animal Farm for our age of relentless materialism.”—The New York Times

Editorial Review

An unputdownable listen to devour seaside
Fans of bingeable reality TV and speculative fiction alike will find themselves gripped by the premise of Aisling Rawle's debut. Our beautiful heroine Lily wakes inside "the compound"—the remote desert set of a blockbuster reality show—where she must compete against 18 other contestants to earn both prizes and the right to stay. Amidst the romance and machinations, there's also this mysterious, niggling sense that just maybe beyond the borders of their titular home, there's an apocalyptic event on the horizon. Beyond that unnerving mystery, the combustion engine at the heart of this stylish story is Rawle's nuanced understanding of the motivations at play when beautiful people rank themselves against one another. She renders them far more human and tangible than the show producers ever would. It was enough to make this listener wonder if the author herself had ever enjoyed a stint of temporary fame; but it's more likely that—as a secondary school teacher by trade—Rawle knows better than most the feeling of sharks swarming. —Emily C., Audible Editor

Very interesting and insightful into reality shows human nature, and how having everything you want without family, friends and significant others is just stuff. Also depicts, ugly side of human nature and people’s ability to lie, revenge jealousy, and a host of emotions.

having everything with relationships nothing

Very Love Island/Hunger Games. I get bored very easily, and this had me transfixed from beginning to end!

"Page turner!!!"

The first half-ish of the book is a lot of character development. I was a bit bummed by that as that only left the last half.

This had the potential to be a REALLY good book following many different possibilities of a storyline. But alas - that did not happen. I don’t quite know what the author was trying to get across - a life lesson? Copy reality tv? I was left scratching my head.

The ending left way too many questions. Only if there was a sequel would the ending sit well with me.

Hmm….. an interesting read

Just as fascinating as a reality show, this book explores the relationships between former strangers, thrown together in the fake environment of a reality television show. Contestants become cruel and even violent with each other, just for the sake of staying on the show a little longer.

Addicting - readers are kept on the edge

This book needs to be updated to include an actual ending, rather than the author simply ceasing writing it.

Waiting for the ending

I really enjoyed the storytelling and the firsthand perspective provided by Lily as she navigates through the process. The characters were perfectly complex, each with their own imperfections. It was dystopian but hopeful. Highly recommend!

I finished it in 2 days!

I felt like the whole point of the story was a miss. Hated the ending, it was just blah

Kept waiting

U kinda get dropped in to the Story, and it slowly builds to this grotesque lord of the flies/paradise Island circus… it’s frighteningly realistic and like a wreck… you can’t look away

So creepy

Interesting story for sure! I mean I liked it I guess, idk the ending took me from 3-4 stars! It makes ask a question of myself “what would I do for pleasure”

Love island gone wrong

I preordered this. I couldn't wait for it to come out. I was disappointed. It sounded like something that would be right up my alley.
Usually I binge listen to books but this one I put down easlily. I did finish it but it just wasn't as good as it sounded.
