Publisher's summary

Considered by many to be the first autobiography/memoir ever written, Confessions is a retrospective view of a life challenged by uncertainty, doubt, human frailty, and earthly desires. Augustine discovers and cherishes a deeply personal relationship with his God, all while describing the day-to-day dealings of his life in the fading, corrupt days of the Roman Empire.

Translated in 1997 by Maria Boulding, this version of The Confessions contains clear, modern language.

A fine abridgement

My one complaint is that the text is abridged. The reading is excellent, superior to another unabridged recording at Audible. Having read the complete text, I note that the abridgement is faithful to Augustine's Confessions. Listening to the text is a very profound experience. I found myself often looking up passages to review the narrative, and enjoying the experience. Highly recommended.

Confessions

Struggled to finish this audiobook, narrator was very monotone and boring. Would not download this narrator again.

Nice book but......

It was a very good book contentwise but I wish it was narrated by Don Leslie, the impact would have been more and listening, enjoyable. After a couple of hours of some lifeless rantings of what would have been a beautiful insight into the life of St. Augustine, I stopped listening. Don did a marvelous job with Become Who You Were Born to Be by Brian Souza.

The Confessions

The only reason this was rated three stars is because the book is not complete. The reading stops in the middle of Book 10.

Excellent

The book itself is excellent.I had a few problems with the narrator, namely,it sounded like he wasn't familiar with the text(a problem i have run into before with audible).Nevertheless the author(Augustine)is very introspective.A great look into the mind of a 4th century early father of the church. Not to mention a look into the mind of a learned man in the 4th century.

What you need to know about this selection

As far as I can tell, this is the only audio book of Sr. Maria Boulding's great translation of The Confessions. I wish it were better. The reader mispronounces key words; his intonation sometimes gets in the way of understanding; the few abridgments in Books 1-9 are strange (there's not a lot abridged, though, so the text is basically complete in Books 1-9); and then, part way through Book 10, it stops. I would love for Audible to try again on this one, as this is an excellent translation of an important work.

Narrator is the Problem!

The book is a classic but I am struggling to listen because the reader uses absolutely no expression or inflection. He destroys the content! The other version available on Audible doesn't sound any more promising on the sample.

Audible needs to find a new versio....
