    Critic reviews

"Intentionally old-fashioned and politically incorrect, this eclectic collection addresses the undeniable boy-appeal of certain facts and activities....the overall premise [is] that action is fun and can be worth the risks." ( School Library Journal)

    Conservative viewpoints

It was a great book, I mean, it was helpful. I wanted to listen to it because my sons are reading it.

So far, on the plus side, I believe my son flipped straight to the girls chapter, read it, came into the living room and just listened to me with a funny smile. I couldn't figure out why until I listened to the audiobook, and in the girls chapter, they instruct the boys to just let women (girls) talk. That they like to do that. I have issues with this as a woman, but at the same time, I do like being listened to, so I'm just going to let it go lol.

The chapters covering war, including Lexington, the Alamo, Concord and Gettysburg, were a very cherry picked oft heard version of history. A viewpoint, but very one-sided. I believe it's good to hear different perspectives though, and I'm hoping the positives will outweigh negatives.
Incidentally, we're reading A People's History of The United States right now, so this should only add to the discussion. The narrator was just fine, the information in the book is mostly factual, so I'll let the biases of the book slide. My boys are just happy to have a book that seems to contain secrets for their ears only. It's fun in that way.

    Doesn't work as an audiobook

This is actually a great book, but it doesn't work as an audiobook. Way too much content is abridged because you need to see diagrams and pictures to understand it. Read the actual book but I'd recommend taking a pass on the audio version.
