Dr. Jason Fung
About this listen
From acclaimed author Dr. Jason Fung, a revolutionary guide to reversing diabetes.
Dr. Jason Fung forever changed the way we think about obesity with his best-selling book, The Obesity Code. Now he has set out to do the same for type 2 diabetes.
Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease - a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. The only way to treat type 2 diabetes effectively, he argues, is proper dieting and intermittent fasting - not medication.

Story
Current medical wisdom advises that anyone suffering from diabetes or prediabetes should eat a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. But in this revolutionary audiobook, Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH, rely on a century of research to show that advice is misguided. While it may improve short-term blood glucose control, such a diet also increases the long-term risk for chronic diseases like cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic kidney disease, and fatty liver disease. The revolutionary solution is to eat a low-fat plant-based whole-food diet.

Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number.

Millions of people take calcium and Vitamin D supplements thinking they're helping their bones. The truth is, without the addition of Vitamin K2, such a health regimen could prove dangerous. Without Vitamin K2, the body cannot direct calcium to the bones where it's needed; instead, the calcium resides in soft tissue, like the arteries, leading to a combination of osteoporosis and atherosclerosis, or the dreaded "calcium paradox".

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than two thousand of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat.

After two centuries of conflicting medical advice, most authorities today believe that those with diabetes can have the same dietary freedom enjoyed by the rest of us, leaving the job of controlling their disease to insulin therapy and other blood-sugar-lowering medications.

Thank you
I was newly diagnosed with Type 2 after hovering around it for some time. I was so frustrated because I am a very logical person and I was seeking logic where not much exists. I perused a book before this one that insisted that managing diabetes would be hard and complicated. Of course one would do what one has to do, but REALLY????
I knew that diet was key but along with it the intermittent fasting is brilliant. I can follow instructions but I couldn’t figure out why a complex carb and fat restricted Vegan diet kept my a1c in check as did general carb restriction with meat and fat. Now I know!!
Armed with this powerful and sensible information I know that I can cure myself without the drugs.
When my last reading went from hovering around 6.5 to 9, I was scared into accepting the fate of drugs. I was so frustrated not knowing how to eat after the Vegan experience I figured that I would be ok as long as I continued to exercise and keep my weight in check. WRONG! The high A1c freaked me out and now I now how it happened. I was eating too much and drinking too much because I had basically given up trying to figure it out (and because I had a new boyfriend after losing my husband of 16 years to cancer and we were having too much fun!).
Thank you Jason for writing this book. I only wish I had discovered it sooner. Now I know what to do and I know it will work. And the new boyfriend is very supportive.

What every physician should read
If there's one book I wish my doctor would read it's this one. But since my physician and your physician are probably both too busy to read it, if you are a type 2 diabetic or heading in that direction, you should.
There is some overlap between this book and his other book Obesity Code, as there should be. And what he says is so important it needs to be read twice anyway.

Hope and Tools for Diabetics
Fantastic overview of the history of diabetes as well as the events surrounding the current diabetes epidemic. Gives solid and useful information and advice to those who have been diagnosed—including tools needed to deal with the doctors handing out pills and poor advice. Every person should read this book, diabetic or not.

Excellent book
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have also read his previous book The Obesity Code. Since I am a nutritionist this is a relevant topic and helps me professionally as well as personally. Highly recommend.

Thanks Dr Fung for addressing this vital topic to American health!
This is the third book I've read by Dr. Fung and it did not disappoint! Easy to follow, logically explained and informative. The only thing I would like to see is some more explanation on the process of ketosis, optimal range to be in for fat burning, how glucose levels intersect with it, and what low levels of glucose should be of concern for those with pre-diabetes.

Invaluable!
Absolutely amazing book! This should be required reading for all HS/College students and for anyone looking to manage their own health.

Another Jason Fung WINNER!
Great resource and while the author IS the narrator, kudos to you Dr. Fung!

Excellent read
Very informative, well narrated, so happy that Dr Fung himself was the narrator. My mother is a type 2 diabetic for over 30 years and we are now following the book’s steps to, hopefully, get her off of the insulin (fingers crossed). It all makes sense and explained very simplistically, so everyone can understand and follow. I hope there’s a Nobel Prize in Dr Fungs future.
