Arriving on the windswept Ile de Ré, Tabby Dewhurst is unable to even afford a room for the night. Overhearing a villager repeating the access code to her front door, she lets herself into the house, and so she enters the strange, hidden world of Emmie, whose sudden offer of friendship is at odds with her obsession with privacy.
Tabby begins to form suspicions about Emmie, suspicions that lead her to a scandal with shattering consequences.

Story
The Heights is a tall, slender apartment building among warehouses in London. Its roof terrace is so discreet, you wouldn’t know it existed if you weren’t standing at the window of the flat directly opposite. But you are. And that’s when you see a man up there - a man you’d recognize anywhere. He may be older now, but it’s definitely him. But that can’t be because he’s been dead for more than two years. You know this for a fact. Because you’re the one who killed him.

The next, Kit hasn’t turned up for the boat and his wife, Melia, has reported him missing. When you get off at your stop, the police are waiting. Another passenger saw you and Kit arguing on the boat home the night before, and the police say that you had a reason to want him dead. You protest. You and Kit are friends - ask Melia, she’ll vouch for you. And who exactly is this other passenger pointing the finger?

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Iris Grey rents a quaint cottage in a picture-perfect Hampshire village, looking to escape from her crumbling marriage. She is drawn to the neighboring Wetherby family and is commissioned to paint a portrait of Dominic Wetherby, a celebrated crime writer. At the Wetherby's Christmas Eve party, the mulled wine is in full flow - but so are tensions and rivalries among the guests. On Christmas Day, the youngest member of the Wetherby family, Lorcan, finds a body in the water. A tragic accident? Or a deadly crime?

I really enjoyed this book. It's a tale of love, the wider consequences of adultery, the depravity of the gutter press and with a jaw dropping twist at the end. Loved it!

Story was interesting but ending was meh
The plot was interesting and unique but the ending left a lot to be desired.
Also, why did Emily’s voice change when her part was being told by Tabby? That was not necessary and a bit confusing.

Still waiting for there to be an ending
Similar to the many other reviews - the story was interesting until the last hour or so when it went fairly off the rails and then abruptly stopped with no real conclusion or summing up of looose ends. Takes “leave the ending up to your imagination “ to new levels. Overall rather than being a mystery or psychological thriller it was more of a sad story/cautionary tale mixed in with another sad story.

Worth a credit
Great book I loved some of the characters hated others for their stupid behavior. Disagreed with the characters that seemed to make pathetic and anti strong woman choices which, frustrated me to no end. Other than that it was a good mystery with twists and turns and remained unpredictable to the end.

The Disappearance of an Ending
The story immediately had my attention. The only time my attention wandered was when I couldn't stop listening at night and fell asleep! There were so many unexpected twists and turns that I kept expecting more and more. That was why the ending was so extremely disappointing. It was as if the author had just had enough of the story and wanted to call it done. Maybe she had already begun another book and decided to move on. I had begun to suspect that the Emily at the end was actually not the real one and the fake one was actually the real one. Now THAT would have been the kind of ending needed to this story! It was a missed opportunity to create a really great ending!
