About this listen
A PUBLISHERS WEEKLY AND KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • “[A] high-stakes story packed with slow-burn pining and plentiful tension.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review
A cunning teen memory merchant falls for the handsome rookie officer on her tail in this swoony dystopian romance that's “one to watch” (Amie Kaufman, New York Times bestselling author of The Isles of the Gods)
In 2364, eighteen-year-old Liv Newman dreams of a future beyond her lower-class life in the Metro. As a Proxy, she uses the neurochip in her brain to sell memories to wealthy clients. Maybe a few illegally, but money equals freedom. So when a customer offers her a ludicrous sum to go on an assignment in no-man’s-land, Liv accepts. Now she just has to survive.
Rookie Forceman Adrian Rao believes in order over all. After discovering that a renegade Proxy’s shady dealings are messing with citizens’ brain chemistry, he vows to extinguish the threat. But when he tracks Liv down, there’s one problem: her memories are gone. Can Adrian bring himself to condemn her for crimes she doesn’t remember?
As Liv and Adrian navigate the world beyond the Metro and their growing feelings for one another, they grapple with who they are, who they could be, and whether another way of living is possible.
Critic reviews
★ "A gutsy debut that will leave readers wanting more."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review
★ "A masterpiece of speculative, postapocalyptic fiction that demands to be devoured in a night or two, this is a white-knuckle ride into the future that is both moving and frightening. If Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower were written for teens, it might look like Tew’s debut."—School Library Journal, starred review

The stars….
I really enjoyed this book! It’s a beautifully written dystopian world sci-fi with hints of Romeo & Juliet in the romance between the two main characters. It tells a story that makes you realize how valuable our happy memories are, and how important it is to keep making them and be present with the people we love and the beauty we take for granted in nature. Highly recommend not only for young adults, but for people my age (48) and older!

Loved it!
I liked the characters and storyline. Dystopian is my favorite. I can’t believe this is a debut novel.

I loved it!
I loved the story. Just about anyone can find themselves relating something in their life to the story and the message to live in the real world (ironically as I type this on a smartphone)

Jeff Bezos fever dream
Loved every second of this. The story and characters are amazing. And the pacing was phenomenal. At each new stage I thought so much has happened how can there still be this much book left. And I am so glad there was! Also ending was great tied up enough but left room for more in the future possibly which I loved. Incredible for a debut novel.

the sci fi/ romance blend
I'm completely in love with this book. I didn't want it to end. All the characters really have me hooked in their lives. I was nervous and anxious. I was full of joy and sadness. I was inspired and really rooting for the main characters to find their way to love!
