Few listeners love a pet story...

...as I do. My daughter has unilaterally banned all dog movies on family movie night because happy or sad,“dad will cry.“ And I probably will. A story, a movie, a news piece... they all hit me in the emotional chops. I’ve had pets all my life… Deployed with heroic dogs to Iraq and Afghanistan and therefore I’m an easy mark. But this compilation of short stories sort of struck me as A bunch of high school students (or perhaps emotionally needy men and women) tasked to write an essay About themselves. Not that these stories we’re not worthy of being shared… But Very little depth and certainly marginal emotional connection with this listener. Where did I put my copy of “the art of racing in the rain”?

Good book for pet lovers, but be prepared to cry.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Dog with the Old Soul to be better than the print version?

Yes.

What other book might you compare The Dog with the Old Soul to and why?

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul is similar because it's a similar collection of essays about how animals have touched their owners lives.

Which character – as performed by Gayle Hendrix and Victor Bevine – was your favorite?

I really enjoyed the essay about the puppy that was adopted from the animal shelter. It was a really sweet story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several - I can't pick one over some others that I loved, and I don't want to give away anything about the story, but I cried several times.

Any additional comments?

I thought that there were some essays that were particularly sad that should not have been included, but other than that, I really enjoyed this one.
