Abelard Hassam di Chirico Flint - Abel, for short - is a rich and silly mouse. He spends most of his days just having fun, going to picnics with his wife, playing croquet with friends, and dancing at parties. Unlike most other mice, Abel has never had to work for anything. All that changes one blustery fall day when his wife’s scarf flutters away in a gust of wind. Abel races off to rescue it and is swept away in a rainstorm. When the storm is over, Abel finds himself washed up a deserted island.

Favourite childhood book brought back to life
We used to read this book so much as kids, we’d play imagination games similar to this so it was like reading about ourselves. I loved hearing it brought back to life in an audiobook.

Surprised I'd never read it before
My 6th grader was assigned this for a book report and I enjoyed going along for the ride very much. I love reading books she reads for school so we can talk about them, especially if I haven't read it myself or it's been years. I thought the book had good layers and discussion topics. I knew of the book from seeing it on shelves over the years, but didn't know anything about it other than that. Going in without preconceived notions helped me pay attention and try to enjoy the storytelling as it unfolded and make some guesses about a few things along the way. It has some 'not always easy to talk about' subjects and I think that is why I enjoyed it so much because they were done well. Though some references are dated after so many years, it was still relatable and made for a lot of great conversations with my kid that I hope continue as she has to finish her report.

Delightful Story
What a nice story!! The characters are well drawn so you have a feel for each of the children as the story unfolds. I really enjoyed Alyssa Bresnahan’s narration style.
Don’t know how I missed this book growing up in the 60’s. I think this would be a great introduction to audiobooks for children but the story isn’t just for kids.

Still magical
The story hasn't aged well in a few ways, but the imagination of the mysterious land of Egypt is as magical as it was when I read it when I was nine. The narration was brilliant.
