Publisher's summary

In the days before the Civil War, there lived a Louisiana people unique in Southern history. Though descended from African slaves, they were also descended from the French and Spanish who enslaved them. Called the Free People of Color, this dazzling historical novel chronicles the lives of four of them - men and women caught perilously between the worlds of master and slave, privilege and oppression, passion and pain.

I knew it was the abridged version

I need knew this was an abridges version because of all the excellent reviews. I am rereading the unabridged paperback novel after 14 years.
If you are not familiar with the story or have never read the novel as intended. This "sample" audio version does leave out the true essence of the lives and struggles of the free people of color. Those characters coming truly alive is lost. The spirit of this abridged novel has lost some of its heart. THEREFORE IT IS WORTH READING THE BOOK IN FULL AS IT WAS WRITTEN! However, knowing this and going ahead and giving this version a chance, I was not disappointed! The narrator is excellent and I was engrossed.

Requesting unabridged version with same narrator!

mezmorising

What made the experience of listening to The Feast of All Saints the most enjoyable?

good story, sensuous voice reading

What did you like best about this story?

The immersion into the world of the culture of the time

Have you listened to any of Courtney B. Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no

If you could rename The Feast of All Saints, what would you call it?

The title is perfect

Any additional comments?

The only disappointment is it was only available in abridged. A story this rich and sensuous can only be UNabridged. It was a tease.

Is three hours enough?

I listened to this book because my book club selected it. I was intrigued with the characters in the story and the period of history it explores and the performance was very good. Typically, I purchase unabridged book versions but that was not available. Since it was only three hours long, I wonder what all we missed. I feel like I bought the cliff notes and I don't know how I would feel about reading the entire book. Would it be too slow and boring or would it give us more insight into the lives and struggles of our characters?

Way too abridged! Such a fantastic voice.

The story was hard to follow but the voice acting was really amazing. Wish they had a full version.

Could have been a lot longer

This story seems to be missing a lot I'll have to actually read the book.

Not bad for an abridged version

Any additional comments?

Of all of the Anne Rice's novel's this is one of my favorites! The New Orleans of the 1820s comes alive in this story of young people of all walks of life and their rites of passage into adulthood. Particularly the tragic social life of the Gender de Colours of New Orleans.
