Story
Communication should be clear and concise, and we should get to the point quickly. The problem is we don’t always know how to do this. What does it mean to be concise? How can a complex topic be summarized in just a few lines? This award-winning book is a step-by-step guide for clear, concise communication in everyday work conversations. Being concise is not about trying to condense all the information into 60 seconds. It is about having clear intent, talking about one topic at a time, and focusing on solutions instead of dwelling on problems.

Most of us think of sales as convincing potential customers to believe or do something they don't really want to. But that cutthroat mentality makes the process much harder than it has to be—especially in an economic downturn, when customers are more suspicious and defensive. It's far more productive (and satisfying) when salespeople think like Go-Givers and focus exclusively on creating value for the customer.

Many of us dread having to convey our ideas to others, often feeling ill-equipped, anxious, and awkward. Public speaking experts help by focusing on planned communication experiences such as slide presentations, pitches, or formal talks. Yet, most of our professional and personal communication occurs in spontaneous situations that creep up on us and all too often leave us flustered and stumbling for words. Stanford lecturer, podcast host, and communication expert Matt Abrahams provides tangible, actionable skills to help even the most anxious of speakers succeed when speaking spontaneously.

Has its flaws...
I'm something of an introvert and struggle to make conversation. I picked up this book in hopes of sharpening my conversational skills and it mostly served the purpose.
There is the usual fluff. Debra Fine spends almost an hour of the book telling you how learning small talk skills will improve your life (as though someone who bought a book on the subject needs convincing). She does give mostly solid advice but there is some perplexing and even contradictory stuff, too. One that left me scratching my head was when she advises you to say "Happy Holidays," because you never know what holidays the person you are talking to celebrates, and then in a subsequent chapter advises singles to go on dates with people even if they "aren't the gender you are attracted to." Call me unenlightened but it seems much ruder to me to lead someone on and waste their evening than it does to wish they have a happy holiday that they don't celebrate. I also found the delivery of some of the information to be a bit syrupy. The chapter on conversation killers seemed especially saccharine.
Then there is the narration. Debra Fine is not a bad narrator but she is definitely not a great one. The best I can say is that she sounds forced and exaggerated if tolerable.
The book has its brighter, more practical points but, overall, I felt as though it could've been shortened by almost an hour and, more than once, felt as though Ms. Fine was handing out advice that had nothing to do with small talk.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

Indispensable Goldmine for Learning to Small Talk
Debra Fine’s book on small talk is excellent. I enjoyed her use of humor. Her examples of do’s and don’ts provide a superb range of guidelines for social navigation and small talk. Well, some of the “don’ts” made me nervous that I may inadvertently do one of them as a “don’t look down” problem—but I would still rather be in the know! Thank you for writing this book for all of us introverts/shy people!

Interesting book, bad narration.
It felt a little dry when narrated by the author. It would have definitely been a better experience with a professional narrator.

great practical tips for making small talk
I just listened to this book again for the second or third time. I now think it is a truly great example of how to initiate interpersonal relationships. it almost provides a grammar that describes how relationships and connections with other people evolve. also there are many examples of small talk for different situations. I've listened to at least one other book on small talk and I believe this is the one that speaks to me.
my initial review follows. the initial few chapters seem like an extended infomercial for why there should be a book on small talk. but that really was necessary to set the motivation and perspective for the importance of small talk. it has many practical examples and situations. a great how to book.

Great Advice!
It contains lots of good suggestions, not just prep talk. It has more substance than the similar books I read.
