Editorial reviews

As the British and French descend upon China following the end of the Second Opium War, time traveler Randall Chen has been sent back to protect a sacred tree from destruction and keep history on course, but his mettle is tested when faced with the temptations of Empress Ci Xi. Chris Ride blends historical fiction and fantasy in this imaginative tale, which is given a palpable intrigue by Tyler Coppin, who has a smoky and deliberate tone. Coppin's wide array of accents is impressive and crucial, helping to make Ride's characters well-defined and memorable.

Critic reviews

"A terrific read. What a page turner. It's damned exciting and will take you on an adventure that covers the world and crosses generations... you'll be on the edge of your seat." ( The Daily Telegraph)

Chinese History

A very interesting look at the opeum wars, the Boxer Rebellion and the last imperial rulers of China especially Empress Cixi. Several inconsiquential love stories are also included for those who need them. My primary interest was in 19th century Chinese history and the effect it has had on subsiquent events.

History mixed with Sci-Fi! Wonderful!

I liked the Schumann Frequency a lot (which is previous to this one and should be read first) and was excited to find this second book by Ride. It was not found under the same author name though because Schumann was under "Christopher" and this book is under "Chris", but it is the same author and a continuation of the same characters. What makes this book better than Schumann is that the characters are already established and unlike the first book, the entire plot is entwined within actual historical events. It makes the book so much better when you can read a dozen Wikipedia pages and have a richer understanding of the story! My only con would be the change of pronunciations of some key names from the first book by the narrator and that wasn't too bad. To me, the quality of research and accuracy is on par with Dan Brown. I can't wait for Chris Ride's next book!
