Publisher's summary

Whilst searching a windswept mountainside for the fabled ghost moth fungus, a young Tibetan boy unearths a mysterious relic. Moments later the People’s Liberation Army of China marches into his isolated village in the valley below and begins to dismantle an ancient way of life. As the brutal oppression grows, the boy’s precious find becomes first a symbol of hope for the villagers then a tool of survival for a people and a religion. It must be preserved at all costs.

Sixty years later, mountain guide Neil Quinn is wrapping up his last climb of the season on the highest mountain in Tibet when a transport shortage leaves him stuck in an empty base camp. An earthquake sets off a chain of mysterious events that directly connect the English climber to the ongoing tragedies of a troubled land where the Chinese authorities strive still for complete control.

Unsure of precisely what he witnessed yet determined to protect its truth, Quinn returns to Kathmandu and enlists the help of a famous historian of the Himalayas, an erstwhile American journalist, and a cast of locals as enigmatic as that ancient city - each with their own reasons for joining his quest. Manipulation and murder dog their every step as they strive to piece together a complex puzzle from Tibet’s tortured past while navigating the treacherous present.

worth the patience

it takes a few chapters to get a handle on the story, but once you do, it's so worth it! Fascinating look at the oppression of Tibet.

Awesome second Niel Quinn book

Similar to the first book in that the plot was different than most, and for myself, educational. An excellent story with different, distinct characters.

Well done, leaves you wanting more

I purchased this book under mystery selections. It is really a novel, not sure why it was placed in the mystery category However, I was not disappointed as I love books on Everest, mountain climbing, etc. Having purchased a Tibetan Terrier, the good luck dog of the Tibetan Monks, I was interested in what the author had to say about Tibet. None of the information was new, but it is a well thought out book of fiction placed in modern history.. PS If you do a search you can find images of the Tibetan Terrier (not really a terrier breed) with the monks of Tibet and with the Dali Lama

Just a quick compliment

I really love both books by the author. The summit is more exciting but ghost moths is probably a better story... blah, at any rate both are great and when I figured out the writer did his own narration I was honestly surprised. Most of the time when an author does the narration it's horrible and barely worth listening to but this dude excels at it.

I don't climb mountains or have any desire too, but I get an idea of the passion and commitment the author has to it from the writing. It makes me wish I did have an interest in it honestly.

oh, and the reference to the zen of motorcycle repair definitely sold me on being a fan. I never met anyone who read that book that I didn't get along with.

thanks!
