About this listen

Audie Awards Winner, 2010

The stunning third and final novel in Stieg Larsson’s internationally best-selling trilogy.

Lisbeth Salander—the heart of Larsson’s two previous novels—lies in critical condition, a bullet wound to her head, in the intensive care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She’s fighting for her life in more ways than one: if and when she recovers, she’ll be taken back to Stockholm to stand trial for three murders. With the help of her friend, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those in authority who have allowed the vulnerable, like herself, to suffer abuse and violence. And, on her own, she will plot revenge—against the man who tried to kill her, and the corrupt government institutions that very nearly destroyed her life.

Once upon a time, she was a victim. Now Salander is fighting back.

Critic reviews

“Larsson’s vivid characters, the depth of detail across three books, the powerfully imaginative plot, and the sheer verve of the writing make the trilogy a masterpiece of the genre.” (The Economist)

“The literary equivalent of a caffeine rush. . . . Larsson was one of those rare writers who could keep you up until 3 a.m. and then make you want to rush home the next night to do it again.” (Newsweek)

“Salander is someone you will never forget. . . . Anyone who enjoys grounding their imaginations in hundreds . . . of exciting pages about the way we live now ought to take advantage of this trilogy.” (Chicago Tribune)

Worth the wait!

I just finished TGWKTHN and I am nothing but pleased. My only regret is that the story is finally over. Blomkvist and Salander continue to be among my favorite characters in all of literature. If you have not begun to read this trilogy I would highly suggest the Audible version. Simon Vance has done as good a reading as I have heard to date.

Better read the first two....

You'll be clueless if you pick this up before the first two. I'm only partly into it, but it is essentially page 631 and on from "....played with Fire". If you haven't read (or better yet, listened to) the first two, do yourself a favor and do so. Really great reads. I'm already regretting the Salander saga is ending.

Great Series with Wonderful Ending

A moving ending to a thrilling tale. It is tragic that Larsson died so young and will not be able to finish the other 6 novels he outlined.
The reading of all three audible books in the series was superb and enhanced the narrative.
Well done.

Don't miss this one!

Wow!! Just finished this last of the three Larsson books. It is so very unique and perfectly done in every way. The narration is as good as it gets. Make sure you listen to the three in order but do listen. They are exceptional and a great way to pass time.

I Will Miss Lizbeth

Fun but not the best in series. Also not a good one to read out of order (this is 3rd in series). The bad of the book was it was a bit long winded at times, went over old material more than it had to, and there was not enouugh of Lizbeth in this one for my taste.

The Good. It was still fun, exciting, and when we did get Lizbeth it was the Lizbeth we her fans love.

The reader is wonderful as always. Will miss the continuation of the series.

And the Finale

I was thrilled to be able to download this third in the series by Stieg Larsson before a long 5 week sailing trip. A fairly satisfying trilogy, although I think the first two were a bit better than #3. It is clear that editing was needed to produce a more polished novel.............but the author's book was published posthumously before he had completely finished the book. So we are left with a slightly drawn out version of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. Simon Vance is fabulous as the narrator.

A very special conclusion to the trilogy

The 3rd book was my favorite as it picked up right where book 2 left off, By that time, I was fully engaged with the characters, and could not wait to find out what happened next.

Perhaps most intriguing to me was realizing that the author was telling me fascinating details about government bureaucrary and how it works. Those kinds of things usually invite boredom, but the character presentation in these books seemed so intriguing that it didn't matter where you were... whether the newsroom, the magazine's offices, the hospital, or the myriad of other settings, you were just engaged in the story.

WOW - Lisbeth is Super Woman

Loved this series - this was by far the best of the 3. I can not imagine how Lisbeth survived everything and help set everyone up. The only thing missing was a list of who is who from all 3 books

A great finish to a great trilogy!!!

It all comes together with Lizabeth Salander freedom on the line!! Book three starts were book two left off, Lizabeths dad and brother on the run or down the hallway of the hospital you know she is in trouble!!! If you read the first two books you know Lizabeth isn't gong down without a fight. I think the best part of the book is the last hour, right when you think everything is ok here she goes again!!! It's awesome, then Mikael Bloomkvist is at her door!!! What a friend she loves to hate and then love again!!! Must read

Sad there are no more "Girls" to come

As much as I had looked forward to this final book, which was supposed to be the third of ten, I dreaded finishing because I knew there were no more. I had the same feeling after finishing book 20 of the Aubrey-Maturin series knowing that those lives that had so captured my imagination were ended without an ending. Reg Keeland (aka Steven T. Murray) does another excellent job with translation and Simon Vance is wonderful as always as the reader. Great book and great listen.
