About this listen

We all know that the quality of education served up to our children in U.S. schools ranges from outstanding to shockingly inadequate. How can parents tell the difference? And how do they make sure their kids get what's best? Even the most involved and informed parents can feel overwhelmed and confused when making important decisions about their child's education. And the scary truth is that evaluating a school based on test scores and college admissions data is like selecting a car based on the color of its paint.

Synthesizing cutting-edge research and first-hand reporting, Peg Tyre offers parents far smarter and more sophisticated ways to assess a classroom and decide if the school and the teacher have the right stuff. Passionate and persuasive, The Good School empowers parents to make sense of headlines; constructively engage teachers, administrators, and school boards; and figure out the best options for their children - from among local public schools, magnet programs, charter schools, home schooling, or parochial or private education.

Good advice

I am working on my doctorate in Education and read this to see what the current thought was about selecting schools. I thought it was well thought out and gave some really good advice to parents. If you are a parent who cares where their children are going to school, I highly recommend reading this book.

Actionable Counsel

Excellent reliance on applicable, contemporary educational research. Tyre makes the point that in no other professional field is there such a push and pull to use one hundred year old technology. As consumers we demand that most other professional disciplines make full use of current technology, but in the field of education, not so much. The theme of the book is to acquaint parents with information about the current education research, and to provide methodologies for using that research to maximize the opportunities for their child to become a good learner. Plenty of statistics, data, and anecdotes. Really a good job. I wish I had received such counsel twenty years ago. Potter is an excellent narrator; good choice for this informative work, great enunciation and very neutral accent. Because of her narration style, this book works well on the new Audible faster speed options.
