Publisher's summary

The Gospel and Its Ministry is a classic book in which Sir Robert Anderson deals in fresh and striking terms with the great truths of the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, grace, the cross, faith, repentance and the Spirit's work, substitution, righteousness, election, sanctification, reconciliation, and justification.

“Addressed to no special class, this book is intended for all who are interested in the doctrine of the Gospel. In the past it has proved helpful to not a few inquirers after truth; and it has been used as a text-book by many who seek to teach the truth to others.” - Sir Robert Anderson, in the Preface to The Gospel and Its Ministry

It was said “Sir Robert Anderson’s books are amongst the most valuable of our day, and will long abide as a testimony to the truth of the Gospel”. Still in print 150 years after it was first published, this book is just as helpful and enlightening as it was then.

A word about the author: Sir Robert Anderson (1841 -1918)

Robert Anderson was born in Ireland on 29 May 1841. He called himself "An anglicised Irishman of Scottish extraction". Educated in Ireland and France, then studying Law at Trinity College Dublin, he later became Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department at Scotland Yard, at a time when London was in the midst of the “Jack-the-Ripper” scare. But the criminals would have been more than a little surprised had they known that the man behind the scenes who hunted them down was author of many books on the Bible and the Christian life. No less amazed would have been many a professional burglar could he have come upon the C.I.D. Chief giving a Gospel address in some London mission hail.

His life of 77 years was a many-sided one, in some respects, unique because during his 35 years of public service, when Sir Robert Anderson was at leisure from official duties, he undertook literary work in defence of Christian truth and the authority of Holy Scripture. The qualities which made him eminent in official life, together with his loyalty to truth and his incisive logic, rendered his advocacy of those causes weighty and influential. His was not an academic faith but his preaching and writing came from a deep personal faith in the God whose Truths he ever defended.

"Safe. Safe in Jehovah's keeping, Led by His glorious arm, God is Himself my refuge, A present help from harm. Fears may at times distress me, Griefs may my soul annoy; God is my strength and portion, God my exceeding joy." - Robert Anderson

He died in London following a bout of Spanish flu on 15 November 1918 aged 77.
