Editorial reviews

The eighteen stories included in this collection vary in length from four minutes to twenty. They were originally published in Scary Stories & Ghost Stories from the Southwest. The stories have an eerie, haunting quality but shouldn't keep youngsters up at night. "It Has No Face" is effectively told and might be a candidate for dramatization if The Twilight Zone is ever revived. The Youngs' experienced storytelling voices effectively contrast with one another: hers clear and strong, his resonant and smooth.

In My Top 3 Scary Story Audiobooks Ever!

I have always loved spooky stories, since grade school. These are the kind I loved in 4th-8th Grades, and I love them as much as an adult. They may be a little more dated than Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, by Alvin Schwartz. But they are the same authentic folklore/ghost lore genre that stands the test of time. There is something especially eerie about witnessing events and people who existed long ago, carrying out their lives like actors in a ghastly play. Some of the stories are comforting, other deeply unsettling. Some are cautionary tales. All explore the mystery of life beyond the grave. Good prevails over evil, wisdom over foolishness. I would rather buy my kids this book than the many written recently that are full of gratuitous violence, evil entities, with little moral or plot. This anthology is full of tortured souls who made mistakes in life. In their wandering eternity of suffering, they share with us their horror and impart lessons. But we have to listen, alone or with friends, in the dark and let their grim reality sink in. Or is it reality? Enjoy the cold chill of the spirits passing through your speakers, while you decide.
