Publisher's summary

It starts with an odd hum that brings headaches and nosebleeds to the inhabitants of a remote, sleepy country town. Then a sinkhole begins to form...and out from that hole comes the townspeople's worst nightmares.

Facing their fears and the growing madness, a group of survivors descend into the collapsed area in an attempt to save what is left of their town. Sacrifices will be required, but will they be enough?

The hole is growing...spreading...and the horror within it is growing stronger....

Scary and Hilarious

I can't even say how much I enjoyed this book. When I finished this story I actually grieved for the characters because I knew how much I'd miss them, I almost just started it over again! Meikle creates a world so complete with characters so fully fleshed out that I felt like I personally knew them. I fell in love with many of them and I'm hoping beyond hope that there is a sequel to 'The Hole.'

This story begins real-world-scary in that towns folk are besieged by giant holes forming in the ground that are swallowing up houses, cars and people at random. Big Man Sherif teams up with the town doctor to try and keep his townspeople safe. Along with a couple drunks and a rude old lady, these characters fight to the ends of the Earth to stay alive. I can't say more for fear of spoilers, but I can say that I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys horror and adventure. David A. Wood gives an absolutely phenomenal performance in this book.

it's ok

This audible was just ok for me. thought it was going a different route but it didn't. Those things saying Fred is dead got really ignoring after a while. I didn't care for the ending. Wanted the two who sacrificed themselves to have a better ending. Moving on to find another audible.

Pretty Good Story

I received this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first story I have heard/read from William Meikle, and I enjoyed it. The story is good, though I didn’t love the characters. They are crafted well, they just didn’t resonate with me.
The story has something of a “Tremors” vibe, with there being a subterranean mystery. The main characters too remind me of the leads in that movie, as does the setting. There are some other similarities, though for the conflict Meikle turns to the occult rather than graboids.
David A. Wood does a good job of narrating. The character voices are distinct enough and his diction is crisp.

Should have been a short story

Early on you could tell where this was going. Rehash of an old story. Wait until you get to the chant. If that had happened sooner, I would have quit listening then. Oh, yeah, another shallow ending.

Surprisingly good

I hardly write any reviews, but on this book, I am. I just wanted to try something different, and I was pleasantly surprised.
This book was well written. The book moves fast, and the narrator did a fantastic job! I was skeptical about this book when I downloaded it with a free credit but I gave it a shot. I truly enjoyed this book! I am not sure if this is a book that I would buy to keep in my huge library of actual hard copies of my books, but it is worth listening to.
I do recommend this book for anyone to try. The plot was not what I was expecting, which made made the book intriguing. If I had the time, I would have listened to this book in one whole day! I enjoyed it that much!! However, I have an extremely busy schedule. Therefore, I used every bit of my downtime to listen to this book. I thoroughly enjoyed “The Hole” and I highly recommend this book.

Bizarre back-woods danger with scary THINGS!

A frightening tale on many levels …most of which lead DOWN to horrifying twists & turns! (snicker)

• Growing danger but it ends up being the likable characters which really fuel the roller-coaster.

• Creatively written with smooth narration.

• Lots of adventure that gets going fast, and doesn't wait for you to catch up... because it can’t ~ things are chasing you!

• More Cleaver - Less Cliche.

I’ve not been this riveted & entertained by a horror novel since I read “Phantoms”.

Fred is Dead

I have to admit I totally enjoyed this book and make me think of all of the sink holes that have been occurring but this book takes it to another level of fear. The main characters are Sheriff Bill Wozniak, Janet Dickson (town doctor), Charlie Watson (town drunk and one of my favorites), Fred Grant and Ellen Simmons (a complainer). Just prior to the holes open up every one hears a hum, has nosebleeds, headaches then see different apparitions. Recommend if you enjoy old time horror with good narration. We Mean....

The story starts out fast paced and keeps that pace until the end. Even at almost seven hours long this book flies by and before you know it you know it you are at the end. The overall story feels like it grabs little pieces of ideas from a lot of other stories as everything always felt a little familiar. The overall flow of everything was done quite well and I found it to be an easy listen, but one that I was excited to continue on with as I quickly became invested in the characters and the mystery.

Overall, I liked the personal interactions of the main characters more so than the plot. It was a fun plot, but I really liked how the characters fit into the setting, how each of them developed throughout the story, and just how each one brought a unique personality to the group. The small-town setting coupled with the small town people were really what got me into their plight and had me emotionally attached to their survival. Meikle has a great ability to describe the characters and I instantly felt like I lived in the town and knew each person first hand. Meikle’s writing in general was quite descriptive and I found myself really enjoying his style.

Wood does a great job narrating this story. His voice perfectly fit the setting and characters. He did a great job with his character voices and I really liked Bill’s and Charlie’s voice. Since I was so character focused with this story, I really think Wood’s narration solidified that aspect for me as he did a solid job bringing each individual character to life and definitely wouldn’t have liked the book as much without him.

Entertaining And Spooky

A solid creepy yarn about a hole, but not just any hole as you'd likely suspect. It takes place in a small town with characters who feel like people you've known or could imagine living down the street as they deal with horrific circumstances with some very supernatural and their fellow humans trying to make it through the same things. The horror is more atmospheric and creepy than graphic, and it does a pretty good job of setting a mood of unease over things.

The story is paced pretty well and is pretty solid start to finish and the narration is solid as well as the narrator breathes life into the characters.
