About this listen

It's Christmas Eve, 1979, in Wichita, and Charlie Arglist, a crooked lawyer and strip-club owner, is drunkenly making the rounds before he blows town for good. Getting progressively drunker and deeper in trouble, Charlie needs to drop off a photograph of a local official in a compromising position and steal some drug money. Before it's all over, a lot of people are going to wind up dead.©2000 Scott Phillips (P)2005 Blackstone Audiobooks Literature & Fiction Suspense Fiction Scary

Critic reviews

"[A] funny, craftily malevolent first novel, an ice-pick-sharp crime story that sustains its film-noir energy all the way to an outrageous whammy of an ending." (The New York Times)
"A pitch-perfect foray into pulp fiction, witty and bitter, with an ironic conclusion that makes a neat package." (Library Journal)

The ice harvest

Amusing story of murder and betrayal. violence and plenty of double crossing characters are just a few of the actions that this story will surprise you with.

Worth the time.

Love the story. Love Grover as narrator. Dislike strongly the ending. I just think of the movie ending and stop listening.

Loves it

I loved this book, the ending sucked but all in all it was a great book with a great reader. It’s got Christmas, crime, and everything I love in a story, highly recommend.

Entertaining!

I didn't know what to expect, but this turned out to be really good. Surprising and a little twisty and quite entertaining. The narrator did solid justice to the book.

Entertaining ...

This isn't bad. It was enjoyable way to pass the time. If you like movies like Blood Simple and A Simple Plan, if you appreciate almost anything Billie Bob Thorton is in, then you'll enjoy this one. Gardner did a nice job with the narration.

depends on the listener

you will either like it or hate it depending on how you feel about having no likable characters (except a few sentences of a girl with a deadbeat dad), the stripbar/drunk/foul mouth side of the city, and being depressed and pessimistic on Christmas.

A little slow at times

There were slow parts in this book and some unbelievable parts, but overall okay.

Loved it.

Nice and seedy Holiday themed crime novel is a fun read for those that like it dark...... and don't like the insipid Holidays.

Unfortunate

I got this book because I love the narrator but even he couldn't save this book. It was full of characters that were shallow and unlikable. A waste of money.

if I could get a refund and rate Zero stars I would.

To be clear the literal writing, characters, and atmosphere are palpable. I just didn't enjoy the characters nor atmosphere, and didn't want to be in that world.

A book club selected this book, expecting mystery, suspense, or action. I was so disgusted by the characters degrading other disempowered characters. I tried to get thru a few chapters but gave up because it only got worse.

I wish the author made better use of his writing to add better contributions to the literary world, not celebrating sleazy portrayals in seedy spaces. Just perpetuates harmful tropes about women being degraded and objectified to further others' storylines.
