About this listen
Katie Price is baffled when a man claiming to be her grandfather leaves her his entire estate in the Scottish Highlands. The bulk of the estate consists of a thriving whisky distillery and a moldering castle, where the eccentric old man actually lived until his death. The will stipulates that Katie must travel to Scotland and claim her inheritance in person.
As Katie’s stay extends from weeks into months, she uncovers the secret that led to her mother’s birth, and begins to unravel a 250-year-old mystery surrounding the beautiful young wife of the last laird of Clan McBride. According to local lore, Isobel McBride vanished from the castle without a trace shortly after the Battle of Culloden, and some believe that her ghost still walks the battlements at night. A strange dream in Isobel’s tower room leads Katie to Isobel’s hiding place, where she discovers love letters from a man other than Isobel’s husband, his initials being the only clue to his identity.
As Katie begins to unearth the clues to Isobel’s fate, she embarks on a romantic journey of her own and finds a new life she never expected.
Author's note: Due to several complaints, the book has been extensively re-edited as of July 20, 2013.

Lovely Romance
The story started of a little slow but once I got past the first chapter, I really started to enjoy the book. I love the romantic parts of the story. I don't want to give anything away but I will say. Everyone who falls in love ,I loved. The mean and somewhat evil characters, I liked what happened to them.

enjoyable
I do like how Irina Shapiro takes the reader back in time while also writing in current time. It makes the whole listening experience that much more enjoyable because you learn about what happened in the past that affects what is going on and influencing the present. Makes for a nice change.

Easy listen
Book was okay, the ending is cliche. Reader isn’t bad, but not right for this book or genre. Accents aren’t her strong point. It’s a light easy listen if you can get past the narration.

Scottish History
I loved the idea of following 3 stories! I was hesitant because there were several bad reviews, but I fell in love with this story.
You’re following the story of someone who was told her grandfather willed a Scottish castle. She and her family weren’t aware of who the grandfather was so she went to Scotland to learn what everything was about so we follow her story about looking for family clues in Scotland.
The castle was rumored to be haunted so we get to follow the story of what happened to the occupants so many years ago.
As history is uncovered we also get to learn the history of who the mysterious grandfather is.
I loved how everything unraveled and the journey it took to get everyone there.

Interesting Listen
Spoiler free review:
The story is vey interesting by two different stories on in the past and how it intersects the future. Ms. Shapiro does a wonderful job pulling you into Scotland current/past. I found myself more invested in the past story more than the present but I enjoyed it as it was a style I have not encountered before.
The narration was ok, however, she struggled with the accents and maintaining continuity throughout. Some other reviewers struggled with it. But I was ok. You do need to pay more attention during your listen as the time period jumps can sneak up on you if you are multi-tasking.

The narrator was very easy to listen to and the story was a good page turner.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
It would have been nice to explore more about Katie's uncanny connection with the past.
Which character – as performed by Charity Spencer – was your favorite?
The main voice of the story - Katie. Spencer did an excellent job making the character likable and interesting. Her inflection was right on and her tone was easy to listen to.

Entertaining read
Having enjoyed several Irina Shapiro’s books, I selected this book and quite happy I ignored the reviews. I love stories that take place in the present and connected to the past with some mystery and romance. This was a light, enjoyable read. The narration was good except for the Scottish brogue.

Don’t believe all the reviews
I was skeptical about this book after reading some of the reviews especially since I really love a good Scottish romance and hate when I can’t make it through a book due to bad writing or narration. I still went ahead and listened to The Inheritance and I loved the story. The narrator did well though not Scottish so there wasn’t that sweet and sexy Scottish brogue but that’s to be expected since ummmm She isn’t Scottish! Some said she read monotone ... not true I was totally invested in the story and listened to it all in one sitting. As for the story itself it was set in the present with a walk through history which was a nice change in pace as normally I’m use to all historical romance or time travel. The author did a good job at running two love stories simultaneously so that was a bonus ❤️past and present Scotland in one book❤️ on and a nice nod to another author in this book was the coolest thing💞 got a smile from me☺️ #audiobookobsessionsreviewer

The quest for her ancestry
Great story running two timelines. Love the details, felt like I was right there with them.
