About this listen

Number-one New York Times best seller

John Grisham’s first work of nonfiction: a true crime story that will terrify anyone who believes in the presumption of innocence.

Soon to be a Netflix original documentary series

“Both an American tragedy and [Grisham’s] strongest legal thriller yet, all the more gripping because it happens to be true.” (Entertainment Weekly)

In the town of Ada, Oklahoma, Ron Williamson was going to be the next Mickey Mantle. But on his way to the Big Leagues, Ron stumbled, his dreams broken by drinking, drugs, and women. Then, on a winter night in 1982, not far from Ron’s home, a young cocktail waitress named Debra Sue Carter was savagely murdered. The investigation led nowhere. Until, on the flimsiest evidence, it led to Ron Williamson. The washed-up small-town hero was charged, tried, and sentenced to death - in a trial littered with lying witnesses and tainted evidence that would shatter a man’s already broken life, and let a true killer go free.

Impeccably researched, grippingly told, filled with 11th-hour drama, this audio edition of The Innocent Man plays like an edge-of-your-seat legal thriller. It is a book no American can afford to miss.

“Grisham has crafted a legal thriller every bit as suspenseful and fast-paced as his best-selling fiction.” (The Boston Globe)

“A gritty, harrowing true-crime story.” (Time)

“A triumph.” (The Seattle Times)

What listeners say about The Innocent Man

Highly rated for:

The Audiobook Presents A Compelling True Story That Provides A Detailed Factual Account And Thorough Investigative Reporting Into A Tragic Case Of Wrongful Conviction And Miscarriage Of Justice. While The Gripping Real-life Narrative Sheds Light On The Flaws In The Justice System And Prosecutorial Misconduct, Some Listeners Found The Storytelling To Be Slow-paced, With Excessive Unnecessary Details, Repetitive Content Sections, And A Monotonous Narration Style. The Depressing Subject Matter Of An Innocent Man's Ordeal Also Made It A Difficult Listen For Some. Overall, The Book Serves As An Important Portrayal Of Injustice And Highlights The Crucial Work Of The Innocence Project.

Super!

Great Book. Excellently read. Frightening story. Grisham at his best. I'm hoping for more non-fiction from him!

This is a MUST read!!!!

Just finished the book on audible and it was hard to stop listening! The story is very well written. I can only hope Grisham becomes as hooked and inspired by another true story so we can hear his mastery as he lays out the non-fiction genre. Bravo!!!
Side note: While you may not understand the significance of the first several hours, it all becomes extremely important. Lots of layers here and they are each very valuable to the bigger story. Bravo!!!

This was simply amazing!

For Grisham's debut in non-fiction, he hit this out of the ballpark!!!

Interesting but the story moves very slowly. It took me forever to get through it.

Great Book!

I can't believe I forgot to review this book. I absolutely loved it and I felt as if I were there. This may have been my first John Grisham book and now I can't stop. I am from Oklahoma so this book rings very true to me. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is ready to find answers to so many questions and the way small town America works.

Broke My Heart

If you’ve ever wondered as I do how many innocent people are in prison this book will certainly educate you. It’s a pretty factual book with a good bit legalese but I was definitely taken in by the human tragedy of it.
