About this listen
USA TODAY BESTSELLER | WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER
Includes live, archival audio footage documenting the eras of In-N-Out—perfect for In-N-Out superfans!
Discover the official story of In-N-Out Burger––how three generations have created a thriving, family-owned company, why its fans are so wildly loyal, and what led to its explosive growth and evolution into an iconic part of American culture––as told by In-N-Out Burger’s president, Lynsi Snyder.
When Lynsi Snyder’s grandparents founded In-N-Out Burger in 1948, they built it with a passion for quality and service that Lynsi embraced at a young age. After starting as a store associate at age seventeen, she then worked in other departments, gaining firsthand experience with almost every aspect of the family business until she became president in 2010. She has led the company through explosive growth—today, there are three-hundred-ninety-two stores and counting—and is deeply committed to the well-being of the In-N-Out Burger family.
For the first time, in honor of the company’s seventy-fifth anniversary, Lynsi is sharing behind-the-scenes stories, family photos, and info that only real insiders know. In The Ins-N-Outs of In-N-Out Burger, she will share
- her personal stories and experiences of growing up around the restaurant as it expanded and reflections from associates, one of whom was the very first associate at In-N-Out;
- why In-N-Out has focused on a limited menu for seventy-five years and will not franchise or go public;
- how her family’s belief in the gospel and her uncle’s “born-again” experience shaped their life and leadership at the company; and
- insider info such as secret menu items, how to speak In-N-Out, the connection between the company and car racing, and the history behind some favorite memorabilia.
This is the official story of In-N-Out Burger—how three generations have created a thriving, family-owned company, why its fans are so wildly loyal, and what led to its historic growth, expansions into new markets, and evolution into an iconic part of American culture—from someone who has been a part of the company her entire life.
Photos, the In-N-Out Burger “Not-So-Secret Secret Menu,” and more behind-the-scenes info are included in the audiobook companion PDF download.

Story
Joe Coulombe founded what would become Trader Joe’s in the late 1960s and helped shape it into the beloved, quirky food chain it is today. Realizing early on that he could not compete and win by playing the same game his bigger competitors were playing, he decided to build a store for educated people of somewhat modest means. In this way, Joe laid down a blueprint for other business owners to follow to build their own unique shopping experience that customers love, and a work environment that employees love being a part of.

Story
It's the untold story of the renegade burger chain that evokes a passionate following unlike any other. In fast-food corporate America, In-N-Out Burger stands apart. Begun in a tiny shack in the shadow of World War II, this family-owned chain has steadfastly refused to franchise or be sold. It is a testament to old-fashioned values and reminiscent of a simpler time when people, loyalty, and a freshly made, juicy hamburger meant something.

Arnold’s stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold’s father hammered into him above all: be useful.

We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

The 1968 presidential race was a contentious battle between Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Republican Richard Nixon, and former Alabama governor George Wallace. The United States was reeling from the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy and was bitterly divided on the Vietnam War and domestic issues, including civil rights and rising crime. Drawing on previously unexamined archives and numerous interviews, Luke A. Nichter upends the conventional understanding of the campaign.

Since you were old enough to hold a job, you've been hoodwinked to believe that wealth can be created by blindly trusting in the uncontrollable and unpredictable markets: the housing market, the stock market, and the job market. I call this soul-sucking, dream-stealing dogma "The Slowlane" - an impotent financial gamble that dubiously promises wealth in a wheelchair. Used correctly, it is better described as a personal bank on steroids, and a financial bunker for tough times. To be clear, this audiobook is not about the typical garbage peddled by most insurance agents. Rather, an alternative to the risky investment strategies taught by Wall Street. It details a highly efficient form of cash value life insurance designed to supercharge your savings and stockpile wealth.

In Made from Scratch, the late business maverick Kent Taylor tells the legendary story of Texas Roadhouse and in the process reveals its recipe for success: embracing unorthodox business practices. Because isn’t it a little unusual for a company to do almost no advertising? Is it wild to give away free peanuts and rolls and keep prices low, even as costs rise, or to keep the menu basically the same since it opened? Does it fly in the face of reason to prohibit coats and ties at headquarters and to have a CEO who dressed like he was part of the landscaping crew?

Inspired, she posted an ad on Craigslist promising to listen, anonymously and for free, to whatever the speaker felt he or she couldn’t tell anyone else. Emails from people desperate to connect flooded her inbox, and she listened.

Just the beginning of the story.
I enjoyed the book. I learned a few things that I didn’t know about the company. The book truly impressed me how In-N-Out Burger truly cares about service and quality. The book does not dive deeply into the inner workings of the Snyder family The book tries to compact the story into a few pages. The book could’ve easily been introduced as the forward to a much larger project that could be a multivolume endeavor. I recommend reading it but think we need part 2, which Lindsay did allude to writing in the book. Hopefully more to come.

The iconic story of the iconic, In-N-Out Burger
This book allowed me to take an over 60-year-old stroll through memory lane and In-N-Out. I grew up a mile and a half from store number one in Baldwin Park.
The history was incredibly interesting and I commend the brutal honesty of the family history.
I loved hearing all of the fun facts, and gained an even higher respect for the company.

Amazing History
The story provides great insight in to In-N-Out. I always knew there was a reason why I love the place and after hearing the history, who wouldn’t.
