About this listen
In this fast-paced survival story set in Hawaii, electronics fail worldwide, the islands become completely isolated, and a strange starscape fills the sky. Leilani and her father embark on a nightmare odyssey from Oahu to their home on the Big Island. Leilani's epilepsy holds a clue to the disaster, if only they can survive as the islands revert to earlier ways.
A powerful story enriched by fascinating elements of Hawaiian ecology, culture, and warfare, this captivating and dramatic debut from Austin Aslan is the first of two novels.

Story
On a whim, Grady Kendall applies to work as a live-in caretaker for a luxury property in Hawaiʻi, as far from his small-town Maine life as he can imagine. Within days he's flying out to an estate on remote Hokuloa Road, where he quickly uncovers a dark side to the island’s idyllic reputation: it has long been a place where people vanish without a trace. When a young woman from his flight becomes the next to disappear, Grady is determined—and soon desperate—to figure out what's happened to Jessie, and to all those staring out of the island’s “missing" posters.

Reader obviously never lived in nor visited Hawaii
The story was good I didn't expect it to turn into sci-fi but I enjoy sci-fi so that's good. However, the reader, although she had a pleasant voice and did a good job of reading the actual story, had no idea how to pronounce Hawaiian words. it was very disappointing to hear King Kamehameha's name butchered so badly.

Sometimes less is more
i can't say this book lacks imagination, on the contrary its way too much to handle sometimes: too much narrative, too many musings on spiritual or cultural topics. In some ways it's a pity because I love old myths and indigenous stories, as well a book that's rich in spirituality. Yet this author drowns the reader with an excess of these elements. It's a book I wish I could enjoy more, it had so many great moments, but right now I can't remember a single one, as they're all hidden among all the useless details that an editor should had cut off.

Good to the end
What did you love best about The Islands at the End of the World?
This book is probably written for the young teenaged reader, but it caught me from the beginning and held my interest to the end. It was suspenseful yet not as violent as most apocalyptic stories. Even believable with a different twist. I recommend it for the cosy mystery reader with a science fiction interest.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Islands at the End of the World?
I don't want to spoil the mystery.
Have you listened to any of Allyson Ryan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first narration i have listened to of Ms Ryan's and I think she did a fine job.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It kept me on the edge of my seat.

Horrible Narration
How could a production like this not hire a local narrator from Hawaii who actually can pronounce any of the Hawaiian words, dozens and dozens of them that were absolutely mangled by this awful narrator! It started out to be funny with ice shave instead of Shave Ice until that mistake was made about a dozen times at the beginning of the book. It got much worse from there with almost every Hawaiian place name word or even pidgin words horribly mangled! How could a production like this not hire a local narrator who actually can pronounce any of the Hawaiian words dozens and dozens of them that would absolutely mangle by this awful narrator! This is not funny, it's insulting to anyone has ever lived in Hawaii. Absolutely amazing how badly this was done. The narrators problems dont end there. even if you didn't notice how badly the Hawaiian words we pronounce throughout this narration. It's difficult to listen to this woman try to talk like a man or to do voices of any kind because she's really bad at it. almost comical, but just hard to listen.
More amazing is how it wasn't ever edited or listen to before it was published.
Story was a fun ride, but author should not have tried to put such pootly thought science in the book. Incredulous to read, worse to listen.

Not what I was expecting
I love survival stories. I really did not like this one though. I appreciated the setting and the look into the nuances of Hawaiian culture, but this was not enough of an adventure for me. It was dull, I was disappointed and I wouldn't recommend it.
