Instant New York Times Bestseller

One of Barack Obama's Favorite Books of the Year

An Economist and Air Mail Best Book of the Year

""Brave and absorbing."" -- New York Times

“Alberta is not just a thorough and responsible reporter but a vibrant writer, capable of rendering a farcical scene in vivid hues.” -- Washington Post

“An astonishingly clear-eyed look at a murky movement.” -- Los Angeles Times

Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement. Through the eyes of televangelists and small-town preachers, celebrity revivalists and everyday churchgoers, Alberta tells the story of a faith cheapened by ephemeral fear, a promise corrupted by partisan subterfuge, and a reputation stained by perpetual scandal.

For millions of conservative Christians, America is their kingdom—a land set apart, a nation uniquely blessed, a people in special covenant with God. This love of country, however, has given way to right-wing nationalist fervor, a reckless blood-and-soil idolatry that trivializes the kingdom of Jesus Christ. Alberta retraces the arc of the modern evangelical movement, placing political and cultural inflection points in the context of church teachings and traditions, explaining how Donald Trump's presidency and the COVID-19 pandemic only accelerated historical trends that long pointed toward disaster. Reporting from half-empty sanctuaries and standing-room-only convention halls across the country, the author documents a growing fracture inside American Christianity and journeys with listeners through this strange new environment in which loving your enemies is ""woke"" and owning the libs is the answer to WWJD.

Accessing the highest echelons of the American evangelical movement, Alberta investigates the ways in which conservative Christians have pursued, exercised, and often abused power in the name of securing this earthly kingdom. He highlights the battles evangelicals are fighting—and the weapons of their warfare—to demonstrate the disconnect from scripture: Contra the dictates of the New Testament, today's believers are struggling mightily against flesh and blood, eyes fixed on the here and now, desperate for a power that is frivolous and fleeting. Lingering at the intersection of real cultural displacement and perceived religious persecution, Alberta portrays a rapidly secularizing America that has come to distrust the evangelical church, and weaves together present-day narratives of individual pastors and their churches as they confront the twin challenges of lost status and diminished standing.

Sifting through the wreckage—pastors broken, congregations battered, believers losing their religion because of sex scandals and political schemes—Alberta asks: If the American evangelical movement has ceased to glorify God, what is its purpose?

This book resounded with me who has been seeing what’s happening with the churches for over a decade. Wake up people. I listened all night to finish. The author read well which sometimes when this happens I have been turned off. I wish he had an answer or resolution to where we are heading. I plan to re-read in the future.

Filled in the gaps of my knowledge

Well written, and well-argued. Tim Alberta takes on an unenviable but necessary task with wit and erudition.

The best book I read this year.

So glad I listened to this book! Good for you Tim. I enjoyed every chapter of this journey that he brilliantly paved the way for those who have zero knowledge or understanding of what is actually happening in the evangelical world, we’ve all been introduced to in the last few years.

Incredible relatability to the secular readers/listeners.

Alberta tells an interesting story of how some in the church are making a bad name for Christianity. I think there’s truth to this as some treat Trump like an idol but I also believe this is a minority of Christians. It’s a good book for a thought-provoking view on today’s political and religious situations.

This is a thrilling ride through the modern history of American evangelicalism, and I daresay essential reading for anyone seeking an understanding of how, when, and why Christian-American conservatives went so f***ing crazy...

Terrifyingly Insightful, and yet Hopeful for the Future

This book is a must read for everyone! If you've lost confidence in the belief of Jesus' Devine purpose because of the political climate and vitriol of the far-right Christian Nationalists, you will be appalled as you read along, but you will gain real truth and enlightenment for what each of you can do in your own churches, your communities, your everyday life and everyday walk before it's too late. It will take faith, courage, and the Sword of Spirit to lead you with Love in your heart for your fellow man. America has become an idol for the far-right and an instrument of deception by principalities in high places hell-bent on destroying our democratic Republic for the hope of a church-led autocracy. This book exposes many of the grassroot leaders behind the craziness who do not put Jesus in the center of their pulpits.

Clarity, Confirmation, and a guiding light for Hope

I grew up with a woman whose face would be on the dictionary page under "Christian." These people are so far removed from the teachings of the Gospel and the Christ. I could be much more critical, but I can see how easily these people are sucked into the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and believing lies. I am saddened that so many church leaders have become carnival barkers for the crazy. Religion has become a commodity in the US...it is all about the money and not about the Gospel. This is a brave book and I thank Alberta for bringing it to us.

The strength Tim used to write this book and his ability to stay focused on biblical truths. Well done!

Truth!

I enjoyed the frankness that this book used when discussing the extremist elements in American evangelical churches. I particularly thought the segment about clerical abuse could be informative to Catholics as well as evangelicals. There was a lot of overlap between both denominations’ struggles with abuse in their organizations. Lastly I think that the authors emphasis on the fact that not all evangelicals are extremist but rather that their church has been overtaken by ideologues was refreshing. People of faith don’t need to be caricatured but should be seen on a spectrum as Tim Alberta writes in his book.

Eye opening

Very thorough and well written, I had heard bits and pieces of the Fallwells, vaccine deniers, liberty and the evangelicals favor for the twice impeached 91 indictments orange man in the headlines, but didn’t realize the corruption that went along with it. Tim Alberta gives us an inside view of false prophets, negative power and influence over Americans. Lord help us all.🙏🏾
