A game of the Alpha quadrant

Una is a first class novelist. This novel captures perfectly a democratic unions troubles in dealing with a police stae in dire need. Picard is a perfect symbol of our western lofty idealism, contra non democratic powers. One of the best star trek novels for sure, and prelude to the tv series, even though that was a mixed experience in quality .

Interesting backstory for Picard!

I enjoyed this book. it provides many backstory details that make the Picard show more enjoyable. nothing major in the plot happens, but it does add depth to characters and conflict in the show. I will read this book again!

very good

I think this is a good book to show how everything makes sense in the show, I know the show explains to but the book about it is so much better

Required Reading if you plan to watch Picard.

Fantastic back story. My one regret is my own timing. I wish I had read prior to Picard series. The narrator did fantastic job he actually sounds like Patrick Stewart. I could see the characters in my minds eye.

Good, but not great.

The story does fill in the gaps in Picard's sorry, but it is a bit cliche and predictable. The reading is very good, as always. I do not appreciate the extended use of fowl language. I am certainly not a prude, but Star Trek does not need that to tell a good, or great story.

Beautiful character focused piece

This is another great Star Trek offering from Una McCormack. Shame to have no mention of the Yuyat Beta native people or the themes of indigenous rights in general that were central to the Countdown comics, but the themes of classism, both within the Romulan Empire and the Federation were very well thought out and worked very well. The strong parallels to the current climate crisis are not subtle, but are very apt and again work perfectly to hold up a mirror to our current world situation. This gives context to the Federation's decisions leading up to Star Trek Picard, and it really makes you sympathise with characters like Admiral Clancey.

Best Trek Book Yet!

Who doesn't love Jean Luc Picard!?!? This story provides an incredible backstory to the new Picard series. As if the series couldn't be any better, this book literally weaves throughout and provides a lot of very entertaining background on all of the characters. The performance of Robert Petkoff, who is normally fantastic, is an absolute highlight. I can not recommend this book enough.
