About this listen
The Last of the Mohicans is a riveting tale set during colonial times, when the French and Indian War is in full swing in the western part of New York. During an attack by the French on a British outpost, two young sisters, Alice and Cora, are guided through the forest by an Indian guide and a British Army Colonel, to find their father. Several strangers they meet along the way join them on their journey which include two Mohican companions, who are the very last of their kind.
On their journey the group discovers that one of them, Magua, is a traitor and a scout for the Huron which are allied with the French army. After the traitor is ousted, he returns with Huron reinforcement and the group is attacked, and four of the members, including the two sisters, are captured. Hawk-Eye and the two Mohicans escape, vowing to return and rescue their friends. While they wait, the girls and two other members of the group are held captive and live amongst the Huron.
After a triumphant rescue, the group is reunited and continues their journey on to the English stronghold that has been taken by the French. Alice and Cora find their father only to be recaptured once again. An elaborate plan, full of surprises, is put into action as the Mohicans and their friends try to save the girls once more.

Story
Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever. Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

Story
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Story
"To inherit a great fortune. To inherit a great misfortune." These words, from Nathaniel Hawthorne's notebook, neatly encapsulate the theme of The House of the Seven Gables - that of a family whose fortunes are poisoned by its past misdeeds. The sins of the Pyncheon father are visited upon his children over a period of several generations, until such time as one of his descendants unites with a member of the family he has wronged. Love conquers hate, and new blood washes away the original crime.

Story
One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

In 1866, sightings of a legendary sea monster prompt a daring expedition out of New York City. Professor Pierre Aronnax, his servant Conseil, and whaler Ned Land are among the crew of the United States Navy frigate Abraham Lincoln. Though they are fearless, nothing prepares them for the "creature" itself - the Nautilus - a powerful, destructive submarine years ahead of its time. At the helm of the vessel is the brilliant Captain Nemo, who pulls the men deep into the wonders of the seas and the dark depths of his mind.

Based in part on Dickens's own life, it is the story of a young man's journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among its gloriously vivid cast of characters, he e.ncounters his tyrannical stepfather, Mr. Murdstone; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble yet treacherous Uriah Heep; the frivolous, enchanting Dora; and one of literature's great comic creations, the magnificently impecunious Mr. Micawber.

Often hailed as the godfather of today's elite special forces, Robert Rogers trained and led an unorthodox unit of green provincials, raw woodsmen, farmers, and Indian scouts on "impossible" missions in colonial America that are still the stuff of soldiers' legend. The child of marginalized Scots-Irish immigrants, Rogers learned to survive in New England's dark and deadly forests, grasping, as did few others, that a new world required new forms of warfare. John F. Ross not only re-creates Rogers's life and his spectacular battles with breathtaking immediacy and meticulous accuracy...

One of the great adventure novels of our language creates a most engaging central character, Nostromo. A picturesque man of action and popular hero, Nostromo lives to be "well-spoken of" by the citizens of Costaguana, the mythical South American banana republic where the story takes place. Around this figure, Conrad spins a story of revolution, politics, and racial conflict as complex as Nostromo, the man whose greatest enemy is himself.

On one level...Melville’s tale is an historical adventure telling the story of life aboard ship shortly after the mutiny at Spithead in 1797. Billy is taken from a homeward bound merchantman to serve on the ‘Seventy Four’ HMS Indomitable. He falls foul of Claggart, the ‘Master at Arms’, and the final confrontation results in death. Story
Ingersoll Lockwood invented the fictional character Baron Trump in 1890 for a two-part sci-fi/fantasy series about a privileged German heir who undertakes a sequence of fantastic voyages. The style of the Baron Trump series - a mix of fantasy and young-reader-oriented science fiction - anticipated and may have influenced L. Frank Baum's Oz series. The Travel and Adventures of Little Baron Trump describes Baron's trip around the world with his little dog, meeting new races like the Wind Eaters, Man Hoppers, and Melodious Sneezers.

An unprecedented historical and literary event, this tale written in the 1850s is the only known novel by a female African American slave, and quite possibly the first novel written by a black woman anywhere. A work recently uncovered by renowned scholar and professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., it is a stirring tale of "passing" and the adventures of a young slave as she makes her way to freedom.

Story
The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.

A pleasure to listen to
If you're a fan of the movie as I was, then you'll enjoy the story being told in its full entirety. This audio book will leave nothing to be desired: great characters voiced by the narrator and an exciting plot.

LOVED IT!!!
Though James Fenimore Cooper uses verbose and decorated language at times, the read is made quite enjoyable with the charming voice of David McCallion. At times the book tends to get a bit drawn out in comparison to the movie, but the overall story is very interesting and accurately depicts the views of Native Americans within the United States.
The story is a very nice one following Alice and Cora as they are guided through the forest by an Indian guide and a British colonel, in search of their father. Through a series of mishaps and adventures, Alice and Cora are eventually able to find their father, but only to be captured. It falls on the Mohicans to band together and save them once more.
If you were a fan of the movie, you’ll probably enjoy the book as well, and this version read by David McCallion won't disappoint you!

Great story, poor reading.
Love this story, but the reader couldn't pronounce any of the French dialogue and mispronounced the names of the main characters. I'd assume that one would hire a person with some phonetic knowledge of other languages to read a story with a multicultural premise.

Why Did I Wait So Long?
This is my first J.F. Cooper book, and the quality of writing and the story itself are truly timeless. David McCallion is the perfect narrator - you are transported back in time. Somewhere, I have a book on the Indian tribes of North America. It’s time to find it.

Brilliant book ruined by AWFUL narration
What disappointed you about The Last of the Mohicans?
The narrator never paused, never even took a breath. His constant mispronunciations (such as "corpse" for "corps") were grating. I couldn't finish listening to the book. I'd like to have my credit back please.
