James Stalker
About this listen
There was only one man who was so important that his birth caused our calendar to split in two (B.C./A.D). There was only one man who, despite being tempted, did not sin even once. There was only one man who died for your sins and mine, and by whom we can have eternal life. That man was Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
How much do you know about Jesus? Have you spent much time thinking about how he lived? Do you know him? James Stalker carefully goes through each stage of Jesus’ life and presents, in a biographical format, what we know about our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ.
If anyone deserves to have our attention and our interest, that person is Jesus. He is more than a hero. He is a perfect example of how we should live. He is the only one who gives us any real hope at all. If we are to take up our cross and follow him, we must understand what that means. This book will help you to do just that.
About the author: James Stalker was born in Crieff, Scotland, on February 21, 1848. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh, and he was ordained as a minister of the Free Church of Scotland in 1874. He began his ministry at St. Brycedale, in Kirkcaldy, in that same year, and in 1887, he began pastoral duties at St. Matthew’s in Glasgow. He was also a professor of church history at the Free Church College in Glasgow. James Stalker was a widely known preacher of his day in Scotland and America. He also authored many books, the two best known of which are his Life of Jesus Christ and Life of St. Paul. James Stalker died on February 5, 1927.

Story
Born After Midnight stirs us toward renewal. Be it in the realm of money, worship, worry, or prayer, A. W. Tozer applies God's high wisdom to our everyday living to show sin bitter and Christ sweet, helping us crave heaven and lose our taste for the world. If you will take God for who he says he is, trust his promises as true, and forsake the world in clutching for heaven, it will cost you everything. But it will give you eternity. Born After Midnight invites you to seek what cannot be lost.

Story
Who is Satan? Is he real? How did he become the devil? What is he doing now, and how does he work? What is his ultimate end? This fascinating book describes what God reveals about the archenemy of God and of all believers. Using the Bible, Arthur W. Pink lays out, in an engaging and approachable way, who Satan is, and the “gospel” he uses in his many attempts to confuse and confound the ongoing work of our Lord. This short book is especially relevant to our day, as what Pink saw in “the bud” is now in full bloom and producing much evil fruit.

The Resurrection accounts of Jesus in the Gospels are the most dramatic and impactful stories ever told. The reason for this is at the very foundation of the Christian faith.

Story
In Saved from What?, Dr. R.C. Sproul reveals that the greatest danger we face is the holy wrath of God against our sin. But the glory of the gospel is that the One from whom we need to be saved is the very One who saves us. As we better understand the severity of our sin and the sufficiency of Christ’s atonement, the truth of God’s grace will deepen our worship and drive us to make his salvation known.

Wisdom, encouragement, and exhortation is contained here. Not because of the author's brilliance, but because of the words of truth contained in the gospel of John. And just as the Apostle John didn't draw any attention to himself, so also J. C. Ryle clearly and wonderfully directs his words and our thoughts toward the inspired words of scripture. If we truly love God, we will love his word; and the more we study his word, the more we will love God.

Story
These days, Jesus is often portrayed as a pacifist, a philanthropist, or a docile teacher. He strikes a plastic—and sometimes pathetic—pose in the minds of many. Some prefer the meek and mild Jesus who heals the sick, calms fears, and speaks of peace and goodwill. These things do represent a portion of the Messiah. But tragically, too many have never been exposed to the rest of him. They have never seen a full 360-degree view of the Savior. His boldness in the face of confrontation and why that matters. Until now.

Story
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.
