About this listen

From the author of the Amazon best-selling Broken World series comes an exciting new zombie apocalypse series....

When Regan was a young girl living in the small town of Altus, OK, Kellan was just her brother’s best friend. Then the virus came, turning the world’s population into zombies, and he became so much more. They were only kids, but he saved her. Watched over her. Kept her alive. And he’s been doing the same thing every day since.

After living the apocalypse for nine years, Regan thought they’d experienced every kind of loss and terror imaginable. But when a new group starts wreaking havoc in the Oklahoma wastelands where they live, Regan and Kellan are faced with a new set of horrors.

When they cross paths with a teenage girl, offering to help seems like the right thing to do. But Regan and Kellan soon discover that lending aid to the girl very well could lead to their undoing.

A great addition to the genre

Great zombie post-apocalyptic book, I was wholly entertained. I really liked the characters and the plot. Kate L. Mary is a very talented writer, especially in this genre. I loved how she mixed real emotions, struggles for survival, suspense and romance into her books. I enjoyed Heather Firth's performance; she did very well with the narration. Honestly, I can't wait for the second book in the series.

Another great book by Kate!!!

I absolutely loved this book. I love all of Kate's books but this one has got to be my favorite so far. But I am biased, I grew up in Altus, Ok, and I knew all the places that were mentioned. The narration is awesome as well. I am a Kate fan for life!!!

9 Years In

This zombie book took a while to get into then ¾ way in it started to get good. Enjoyed the characters of Jasper, Kellan, and Regan. Regan was only 9yrs old when she lost her entire family and joined up with Kellan her brother’s best friend and then Jasper. Then it is 9years later and a new group is trying to take over. More romance than zombie

Fairly light storyline mostly consisting of emotional angst between two young people occasionally punctuated by the zombie apocalypse.

A little too YA for my tastes but definitely well written. It deserves a place in zombie fiction.

The narration bugged me. Heather Firth is obviously north midwestern or Canadian by the way she pronounces certain words. It clashes with the small town Oklahoma feel of the story. Pronunciation of frequently said words like “sorry” come out as “soar-y” instead of the Okie way of “sar-ree”. Not a huge deal to most people, I’m sure. Just a little like nails on a chalkboard to someone who has family from Altus.

More budding romance than Apocalyptic

I received this title free as a reviewers copy in exchange for an unbiased voluntary review and I am glad that I got the chance to pick it up even though it wasn't the hardcore zombies everywhere title I anticipated from the title. The story is set in a world that is very believable and the struggles of the characters to just survive and not to mention trying to thrive is a very plausible one; including the trials of finding and keeping love. I am looking forward to picking up the next volume at some point on my own and would recommend giving it a listen.

That said I do have a few comments on the performance and structure of the title. The narrator, who does give her characters different voices which I like, reads VERY slowly. I found my self turning the speed up to 1.8 on the Audible app just to make it tolerable for more than a few minutes at a time. It was more like listening to a child's bedtime story if I didn't. Also as a listener do yourself a bit of a favor and skip up to what is labeled chapter 28(?) and listen through to the end first as that is a bonus novella that does more in a short couple of chapters to set the stage for the world building than most of the book.

good listen

This was a good listen. The naration was done very well. The pace was steady and the story interesting. It ends with a sex scene and a cliffhanger of sorts.

An Oklahoma zompoc adventure- more please!

The Loudest Silence: A Post-Apocalyptic Zombie Novel (Oklahoma Wastelands, Book 1) by Kate L. Mary and narrated by Heather Firth is an amazing zompoc adventure! I recommend if you enjoy stories with great world building/great characters, the zompoc genre, or looking for something new, give this one a try.

What’s it about? Regan and Kellan have been living underground with a small group of folks since the zombie apocalypse began. Regan, who’s been treated as the baby of the group, is now an adult and requests to learn how to survive on her own (killing zombies, going to trade with others, etc.). She has also realized she cares for Kellan. Harper, a lone teenage girl who happens to be immune to the virus, shows up at the group’s hidden bunker one day. They decide to let her in and the troubles begin...It does end in a cliffhanger, or semi-cliffhanger- it’s clear there is more books in the series. The way people were talking in reviews I was expecting way more romance, but I didn’t think there was any more than in previous books I’ve listened to of Kate’s (I felt there were more zombie elements than romance). Favorite quote from the book: “Life isn’t worth living if there’s no risk.”

The narrator, Heather Firth, did an excellent job. Her voices are distinct and her narrating is smooth and easy to listen to.

You also get a bonus called Thank You Daddy (Broken Stories Novelette). It is fantastic! It tells Emma and Blake’s story at the beginning of the apocalypse. I am hoping we get more of their story (hint hint Kate).

Overall I recommend, especially if you love stories with great world building, fun characters, or the zompoc genre. Kate has yet to disappoint me with her writing and she’s in my top three favorite authors of 2019. If you haven’t jumped on the Kate bandwagon, it’s time to do so.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings (for both The Loudest Silence and Thank You Daddy): drinking, death (zombies, people), kidnapping, occasional swearing, weapons (guns), shower between the two main characters followed by sex (not in graphic detail), some sex talk (being a virgin, learning about it, or like things- minimal), threat of/sexual assault (forced removal of clothing on a woman before it is stopped- indicated she would be raped but stops before rape occurs), execution of male with gun, hitting of male in head with bat, war talk (Iraq/Afghanistan- not in detail a mention of past service), death of parents.
