About this listen

From the Hugo Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author of the Expanse, James S. A. Corey, comes the start of a monumental new space opera series.

HOW HUMANITY CAME TO THE PLANET CALLED ANJIIN IS LOST IN THE FOG OF HISTORY, BUT THAT HISTORY IS ABOUT TO END.

The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy.

When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species.

Dafyd Alkhor, assistant to a prestigious scientist, is captured along with his team.

Even he doesn’t suspect that his peculiar insight and skills will be the key to seeing past their captors’ terrifying agenda.

Swept up in a conflict beyond his control and vaster than his imagination, Dafyd is poised to become humanity’s champion—and its betrayer.

This is where his story begins.

“No one builds a universe like James S. A. Corey. The Mercy of Gods is wilder and weirder than you can imagine, and when it ends, all you’ll want is … more.”—John Scalzi, New York Times bestselling author

The possibilities set up by the ending…

Patiently plotted. For those looking for a new Expanse, you may be disappointed at first. This is quite distinct, feeling more remote to our experience than the Expanse did. The writing style feels familiar. The characters are less memorable to me than those of the Expanse, but that may change as the story progresses. The ending was satisfying, though begging for additional entries in the series. The story has a lot of potential. I’m excited to see where the authors decide to take it, as the possibilities seem endless.

Great new series

I love the "just outside of possibility" type sci-fi. Project Hail Mary, Bobiverse, Expanse...the stuff that is fiction but tangential to reality and heavy on technical details. This series fits that bill. Shame it just came out so we've got to wait a while for part 2.

Long buildup but the plot now set

The begining of this book is confusing. It takes a while to figure out exactly what is going on and to get situated in the plot. Don't let this dissuade you though. Once the story is set you realize how the long buildup was necessary. I am looking forward to my 2nd reading/listen and following books.

Like the Expanse, but new and shiny

With Jeff Mays narrating, it’s like the additional Expanse book I always wanted. 10/10 recommend if you enjoyed past James SA Corey novels

It's the beginning

Overall it's a great start to what will be another epic. It's the setup for what's to come. My only real complaint is that everyone in it falls too neutral and flat. I found it hard to connect with anyone of them in any meaningful way. I'm hopeful that the depth of who they are is just beginning to peak out from the curtain. Can't wait for the next one!

Incredible Story!

A refreshing gritty sci-fi book. The character development, overall writing style, dialogue, and pacing of the story all push me to recommend this whole-heartedly!

I’m Hooked

This is not a continuation of the Expanse, it is a whole new universe and an excellent story. I highly recommend.

Ready for the next entry.

At first it was a little hard to separate this from the expanse. Same authors and narrator and all. It differentiates itself pretty quickly, though, and definitely leaves you wanting more.

excellent start to a new series

I was hopeful but also wary about this new release. I hardly ever like an author’s 2nd series as much as their 1st. While Corey’s writing style is now quite familiar, there was nothing else in this story that felt repetitive or worn out. The premise was fresh & intriguing, the plot a real place-turner (so to speak.) The narration was a great fit, smooth & comfortable without upstaging the story. I did have some trouble keeping all the characters straight, but I think that was my problem rather than the author’s. I am very sorry that I’ll likely have to wait quite a while for the next installment.
