About this listen

From the Hugo Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author of the Expanse, James S. A. Corey, comes the start of a monumental new space opera series.

HOW HUMANITY CAME TO THE PLANET CALLED ANJIIN IS LOST IN THE FOG OF HISTORY, BUT THAT HISTORY IS ABOUT TO END.

The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy.

When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species.

Dafyd Alkhor, assistant to a prestigious scientist, is captured along with his team.

Even he doesn’t suspect that his peculiar insight and skills will be the key to seeing past their captors’ terrifying agenda.

Swept up in a conflict beyond his control and vaster than his imagination, Dafyd is poised to become humanity’s champion—and its betrayer.

This is where his story begins.

“No one builds a universe like James S. A. Corey. The Mercy of Gods is wilder and weirder than you can imagine, and when it ends, all you’ll want is … more.”—John Scalzi, New York Times bestselling author

The beginning of another great series!

You really can't go wrong with James S.A. Corey and Jefferson Mays. One of my favorite combinations in sci fi, along with Peter Kenney reading the Culture series . Great world building and a perfect balance of hard sci fi and space opera. Can't wait for the next book.

Original, deep, and beautifully imaginative

The imaginative worlds, characters, and many possible directions that the story can take will keep you running after the narrative. Story gets a bit tangled and slow towards the end, but then revived and came to life again to close with anticipation and thirst that one needs to wait for the second book. The performance of the narrator is 5 star, only because that is as high the rating goes. Half the experience is the perfectly patient and harmonious deliverance.

Can't wait for the next one

This feels like the perfect continuation of their expanse series, without being related. Glad to hear the same narrator again too. The only thing I had trouble with was keeping track of all the characters since the entire group was usually in the same room.

Also, it looks like a novella is coming out in early October!

Hooks and impresses! Epic horizons kept expanding to the perfect ending of a Book One.

Better than The Expanse so far, and I loved The Expanse books. More interesting world building behind it all, the layers of which are gradually unpeeled. The subtle building of tension that unleashes fresh hells in each new part of the book is expertly balanced with attention to the relationships, psychology and sense of self of each major character. Really enjoyable development of the initial problems and I especially liked the swarm and what it suggests for the books to come. Also, excellent choice of Jefferson Mays for the narrator (he was great in The Expanse books and solid in this one, too). Looking forward to more!

Not What I Expected, and I loved it

I knew not to expect the Expanse universe, but I didn’t expect such a departure. Excellent story telling of an excellent story. Also - Jefferson Mays is the absolute best narrator in my audible library.

Can’t wait for more!

A much different tone and setting than the Expanse series, but again it has a well thought out cast of believable characters. It really does feel like you’re with a group of academics, behaving as they do.

Amazing

As soon as the narrator's familiar voice kicked in I was pleasantly eased back into my memories of enjoying The Expanse. This book was definitely worth the wait. It is engaging, complex and brutal in the same way you come to expect from these guys. Holy cow! I loved it! Can't wait for the next one!

James SA Corey is Back

Great and promising start to a new series from my favorite author(s). The world building I feel is a little lacking compared to the first book of the Expanse series but the foundation is all there. Otherwise I really enjoyed this book and am glad Jefferson Mayes is back.

Best science fiction book of 2024!

This book is incredible. The story is mesmerizing, incredible and terrifying. The science, philosophy and the concepts are just brilliant. It is a story that is both nihilistic, misanthropic and hopeful to a degree. James S.A.Corey is a brilliant writer and I can’t wait to read the next two books in this trilogy!
