Publisher's summary
The inspiration for evil may hold the key to murder in this edge-of-your-seat story from Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Jeffery Deaver.
Life appears to imitate art when a series of sadistic murders grips the city. Investigating the carefully orchestrated killings, Detective Gene Tripp and his partner discover that the perp might have been inspired by the best-selling novels and stories of popular thriller author Brody Pierce. Or has the demon of writer’s block driven Brody himself to step over the line between fiction and reality and exploit the dark side of his imagination?
As the detectives race to uncover the truth before more people die, they learn that perhaps yet another boundary has been crossed:
That between real life and the supernatural.

When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

Kidnappers grabbed Jenna in broad daylight, right in front of her children and their horrified classmates. Her family was issued an insane ransom demand: $25 million in cash and jewels, payable by the end of the school day, otherwise they’ll never see her again. As Jenna’s mother scrambles to gather the money, detectives Mo Butler and George Ortega follow the trail of the kidnappers, which will lead them through a sordid landscape of jealous lovers, broken dreamers, and twisted schemers. Death is a topic Bradford Douglas is intimately familiar with. The young attorney is on a crusade against capital punishment. He’s saved a number of death row inmates, but none of his cases has been as tough as the one he now faces: Henry Combs, a vicious serial killer, has only hours to live when Douglas is summoned for a Hail Mary attempt to have the man’s sentence commuted to life imprisonment. As Douglas races to pursue whatever strategies he can think of, he finds his passion for justice giving way to something altogether different. An obsession.

A shocking crime, with a meticulous killer: the victim’s eyes have been removed and the body drained of blood, with no forensic evidence left at the scene. Her boss insists it must be the return of a killer who escaped justice several years ago, leaving a trail of bloody ritualistic killings. Story
As newspapers reported in the 1890s, a woman dubbed "Shakespeare" was found dead in a seedy hotel along the waterfront by Manhattan’s South Street Seaport. The chilling scene recalled for press and police alike Jack the Ripper’s victims in London. Panicked New Yorkers worked feverishly to halt that maniac’s spree from expanding across the Atlantic. The city only sighed relief after detectives abruptly arrested a traveling Algerian ex-soldier for the crime.

Story
The case began in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1922 and lasted for over a decade. The killer has never been found, and the case continues to fascinate true-crime aficianados. A bon vivant Episcopal minister, a not-so-virginal soprano in his choir. The wealthy wife. Her oddball brother. Their furtive maid. The snooping congregants. The bumbling detectives. And in the denouement, a trial, one of the more notable of America’s Jazz Age, covered by the likes of Damon Runyon, Dorothy Dix and James Thurber. All of it hanging on the dramatic testimony of a single, strange witness.

Interesting Short Story
I found "The Muse" to be an interesting short story right up until the end. The end of the story was unbelievable and poorly developed.

Glad I had time
I really enjoyed this book. The narrator was excellent. The quality of the narrator is a big deal and if a book is poorly narrated, I’m likely to ask for a refund or simply stop listening
It was very descriptive and kept my attention. The beauty of audio books is the freedom to continue to listen while doing other things!

Devilishly Delicious Food for Your Imagination
Only author Jeffrey Deaver can write a novella that keeps you enthralled from the first word to the last. His characters are fresh, interesting & blend smoothly into today's modern day world, so much so that you will surely be reading the daily news, just to keep tabs on their whereabouts! He manages to include a plot twist or two, certain to keep the armchair detective guessing and when you're sure that you've solved the crime, there's one last curve ball thrown your way just to keep you on your toes.... No question about it, this author is a master storyteller. I've enjoyed all of his novels including this novella. The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life. I've given this novel 4 🌟🌟🌟🌟 all around.

Thankfully free and short
Actually a decent story idea. Narration is solid. It’s the chapter to chapter transitions that are confusing, not the narrator. But once you get past those, the storyline is intriguing. The problem is the ending was not just a twist, it was unnecessarily rushed and included an unnecessary self inflicted death.
Unsatisfactory transitions and conclusion imho.

Good until the end
The storyline was great until the last twist. I feel like the ending was because the author just didn’t wanna write anymore. It didn’t feel wrapped up, it felt rushed.

Jury's still out on this one
Dunno ... liked it until the big reveal. That twist was far fetched when taken literally but figuratively I can under the message. Just a little messed up. Narration was good though
