Harry Bosch and LAPD Detective Renee Ballard come together again on the murder case that obsessed Bosch's mentor, the man who trained him - new from number one New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly.

Back when Harry Bosch was just a rookie homicide detective, he had an inspiring mentor who taught him to take the work personally and light the fire of relentlessness for every case. Now that mentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, but after his funeral his widow hands Bosch a murder book that Thompson took with him when he left the LAPD 20 years before - the unsolved killing of a troubled young man in an alley used for drug deals.

Bosch brings the murder book to Renée Ballard and asks her to help him find what about the case lit Thompson's fire all those years ago. As she begins her inquiries - while still working her own cases on the midnight shift - Ballad finds aspects of the initial investigation that just don't add up.

The bond between Bosch and Ballard tightens as they become a formidable investigation team. And they soon arrive at a disturbing question: Did Thompson steal the murder book to work the case in retirement, or to make sure it never got solved?

Written with the intense pacing and masterful suspense that have made Michael Connelly "the hard-boiled fiction master of our time" (NPR), The Night Fire continues the unofficial partnership of two fierce detectives determined not to let the fire burn out.

How does he do it?

He's amazing. His books never get old. They are meant to be read. I really enjoy the female component.

Bosch is slowing down

First half really dragged but then picked up towards the end. Might be time for Bosch to pull the pin.

Wow. Amazing

After the first Ballard/Bosch book I wasn’t sure what to expect; however, now with Welliver and Lakin reading their own parts together the book was great. Welliver is such a great Bosch and I could listen to him read just about anything and enjoy it. I hope this partnership continues as a way to continue with the Bosch character.

Harry and the Phoenix

I've been reading Bosch novels for 25 years and for the first time I wasn't sure Harry would make it to the Final page. Ballard is that engrossing. Ballard is just like Bosch but with a fresh perspective. The Night Fire secures what The Late Show started. Ballard as the star. The book series has new protagonist as the TV series gives us Harry for the modern day.

Great listen, but a bit too many story lines -

I do like these two performers together, and having two readers is very hard to pull off so kudos to both Titus Welliver and Christine Lakin. I thought the book had a few too many story lines going on and would prefer more depth in each case rather than more cases. Overall, as always, great work by Michael Connelly.

Excellent read

This is an excellent read.
I have always loved Harry Bosch novels, but these new Ballard and Bosch novels are an incredible new chapter for Harry Bosch! Action packed! Titus Welliver has brought new interesting to this amazing character, Harry Bosch. Christine Lakin as Renée Ballard is a breath of fresh air.

Not sure about this one!

I’ve read other books in the series, and this one just seemed slow to me. There were many different police incidents, and it was almost like you were reading a bunch of police reports. But in the end, it did pull together. The narration was great!
