Publisher's summary

In this riveting novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Last Thing He Told Me, estranged siblings discover their father has been keeping a secret for more than fifty years, one that may have been fatal...

Liame Noone was many things to many people. To the public, he was an exacting, self-made hotel magnate fleeing his past. To his three ex-wives, he was a loving albeit distant family man who kept his finances flush and his families carefully separated. To Nora, he was a father who often loved her from afar—notably, a cliffside cottage perched on the California coast where he fell to his death.

The authorities rule the death accidental, but Nora and her estranged brother Sam have other ideas. As Nora and Sam form an uneasy alliance to unravel the mystery, they start putting together the pieces of their father’s past and uncover a family secret that changes everything.

With Laura Dave’s trademark blend of soulful suspense and evocative family drama, The Night We Lost Him is a riveting thriller with a heartbreaking final twist that you will never see coming.

The narrator

Story was good, nice book. The narration is always outstanding with Julia Whelan. Definitely worth the credit.

Excellent story and amazing performance.

Yet another excellent story by the author with great characters and an interesting mystery to solve. I could listen to the performer read the story over and over. Highly recommend.

gorgeous - could not stop listening

Laura Dave is one of my favorite authors and this is her best novel yet. It's a mystery about a family patriarch's suspicious death, but its so much more.

Rich character development and a heartbreaking love story--and you will never see the twist coming.

Julia Whelan is perfect here. I couldn't love this pairing more.

I loved this book!!!

I love all of Laura Dave’s books. This did not disappoint. I finished it in one day. Could not put it down. A three tissue ending. Narration was, as usual, amazing. Julia Whelan is my favorite!!!🌞

Amazing!!!

I was a little hesitant about LD’s latest release because I absolutely loved The Last Thing He Told Me. But this book is just as phenomenal. Similarities are a fierce loyalty to family even tho at times things appear quite toxic. The other similarity to TLTHTM is the powerful and all encompassing romantic love. There is significant tragedy, grief and disassociation but also compassion, genuine love, and understanding. Character development was flawless and the plot was truly masterful in gripping the reader and drawing them in deeply.

Narration was excellent. Full emotional range for all the characters. Clear distinct voices for each of the characters portrayed!!

Relationship Heavy

This was a great read, but definitely felt less like a thriller and more like a story about strained-family relationships and changing as we grow older.

Holes in story bothered me

I listen to most anything Julia Whelan reads and this book held my interest but the ending was unsatisfying for me. The “resolution” left me with to many unexplained questions and didn’t really add up. The characters seemed happier at the end but a lot of the why or background isn’t really explained. I have loved other Laura Dave books so I’ll just chalk this up to “ok” but not a total miss.
