A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK

A #1
New York Times bestseller, Wall Street Journal Best Book of the Year, and soon to be a major motion picture, this unforgettable novel of love and strength in the face of war has enthralled a generation.

With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, February 2015 - I haven't listened to a book as moving or as heart-wrenching as The Nightingale in a long time. Set in France during WWII, Kristin Hannah's tale follows two sisters as they fight against the Nazis in very different, but equally important, ways. The young, vivacious, and impetuous Isabelle believes she has little in common with her older sister, Vianne, but the two possess a bravery and willful determination that few could match. Hannah’s novel kept me engaged with brief, mysterious sojourns to the 1990s amidst her 1940s narrative, effortlessly traveling between the United States, Paris, and the French countryside. This story has stayed with me all year, and I’m thrilled that it’s Audible’s Best Book of 2015. —Katie, Audible Editor

New review

Originally I didn't like this book. I did not like the narrator at all. I stopped listening only to go back. It turned out to be a fabulous book.

Touching and inspiring!

This book is wonderfully written and performed! I enjoyed it very much! The narrator was superb. Her different character voices were each unique and her inflections were spot on! The story itself was moving and sad and enlightening all at once. Great job to all!

great story

First time author, this is a great story with an excellent narrator. Set in France during World War II, the story is based on two sisters and their experience during the war. One sister became a member of the French Resistance as a teenager and the other stayed in the family home and just tried to survive and keep her family safe. It's easy to overlook what it must have been like to live in France during the war with the Nazi occupation. After listening to the book you realize just how terrible it must have been for all French citizens. My wife and I listened to most of this book on a road trip, an excellent way to experience this book.

Touching story of family and perseverance

This is a truly touching and amazing story. It is a bit long but beautifully performed and worth every minute. A great book if you enjoyed "All the Light We Cannot See"

war,occupation and choices

war from a woman's point of view and a good reminder of the brutality of war especially the brutality of the nazis once they occupied france. The main character was the young and impetuous isabelle, the sister however really showed through her story the horror of living through the occupation and trying at all times to be the protector of her children, the reader was good, reading with a good clear voice.

Loved this story!

What made the experience of listening to The Nightingale the most enjoyable?

I had just visited the Loire and Normandy and this story was perfect - in fact I was searching for something like this before I left. I have not read any other Kristin Hannah and while there were some annoying sections where characters seemed to have an incredible lack of perception, it was a great story about how the French people suffered and dealt in different ways with the German occupation.

What other book might you compare The Nightingale to and why?

The time period is similar to all the light we cannot see but I liked this book better as it felt less preachy.

Which scene was your favorite?

Oh that's so hard, I think near the end where one of the sisters has to say goodbye to someone she loves who doesn't understand why she is saying goodbye (trying not to spoil anything here)
