Acerca de esta escucha

Stirringly evocative, thought provoking, and often jaw dropping, The Operator ranges across SEAL Team Operator Robert O'Neill's awe-inspiring 400-mission career that included his involvement in attempts to rescue "Lone Survivor" Marcus Luttrell and abducted-by-Somali-pirates Captain Richard Phillips and culminated in those famous three shots that dispatched the world's most wanted terrorist, Osama bin Laden.

In this book O'Neill describes his idyllic childhood in Butte, Montana; his impulsive decision to join the SEALs; the arduous evaluation and training process; and the even tougher gauntlet he had to run to join the SEALs' most elite unit. After officially becoming a SEAL, O'Neill would spend more than a decade in the most intense counterterror effort in US history. For extended periods, not a night passed without him and his small team recording multiple enemy kills - and though he was lucky enough to survive, several of the SEALs he'd trained with and fought beside never made it home.

The Operator describes the nonstop action of O'Neill's deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, evokes the black humor of years-long combat, brings to vivid life the lethal efficiency of the military's Tier One units, and reveals firsthand details of the most celebrated terrorist takedown in history.

Have read a bunch of books by operators. This stands a hair above the other's by virtue if the author doing the narrating and the impeccable comic timing of the laugh out loud takes on tho vs that intersperse the life and death episodes.

I will be the first to admit I was more than a little skeptical of this book from the moment I heard of its release. Chief O'Neill and his brothers have done extraordinary things in service to this nation, but are asked to keep a closed lid on some of those accomplishments. To those who might never pick this book up, I suppose you aren't reading this review. O'Neill has a good point. Where were you when you heard about the Bin Laden raid? The mission rapidly became common knowledge. O'Neill takes that opportunity to share his brother's accomplishments and sacrifices with the world.

He does a phenomenal job, especially as his own narrator. This book is full of stories, both about love, and war, and includes enough military-issue sarcasm and humor to keep it grounded. A listener truly feels as though he is there, living among the team and experiencing their moments with them.

And O'Neill does so without divulging national secrets or making himself look like a prima-donna. No easy task given his accomplishments. Where were you when those towers fell? How would it feel to end the man who brought them down?

I recommend this book to anyone who has ever seen the war on television and looked up to those men. Or to those who are just plain interested in the Navy SEALs. This book will inspire the next generation to join the ranks of the special operators who have gone before them in such great service to this wonderful nation. Maybe he should not have written this book. Probably true. But I believe Americans can sleep safer tonight knowing rough men like those in this book stand ready at the door.

Great book and well written. I'm glad he narrated this himself, as it wouldn't have had the same impact if not. Living in VB,l myself, it's neat knowing exactly the 7-11, Taco Bell, etc. he mentions in the book. Thank you for your service, sir.

I loved it!

...that I have come across in dozens of books. Very good read and the Author did an amazing job narrating and obviously did not make any mistakes in the verbiage of the military.
