About this listen

Instant New York Times Best Seller

A Good Morning America and Read with Marie Claire Book Club Pick and a People Best Book of Summer

Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2021 by Time, The Washington Post, Harper’s Bazaar, Entertainment Weekly, Marie Claire, Bustle, BuzzFeed, Parade, Goodreads, Fortune, and BBC

Named a Best Book of 2021 by Time, The Washington Post, Esquire, Vogue, Entertainment Weekly, The Boston Globe, Harper’s Bazaar, and NPR

Urgent, propulsive, and sharp as a knife, The Other Black Girl is an electric debut about the tension that unfurls when two young Black women meet against the starkly white backdrop of New York City book publishing.

Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and microaggressions, she’s thrilled when Harlem-born and bred Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They’ve only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events elevates Hazel to Office Darling, and Nella is left in the dust.

Then the notes begin to appear on Nella’s desk: LEAVE WAGNER. NOW.

It’s hard to believe Hazel is behind these hostile messages. But as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play, she soon realizes that there’s a lot more at stake than just her career.

A whip-smart and dynamic thriller and sly social commentary that is perfect for anyone who has ever felt manipulated, threatened, or overlooked in the workplace, The Other Black Girl will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last twist.

Critic reviews

"King does an excellent job portraying the conflicted protagonist and is at her strongest delivering dialogue. The other narrators also are very good. This slow-building audiobook is built on psychological tension. Part suspense, part publishing industry takedown, it's both entertaining and thought-provoking." (AudioFile Magazine)

Hair Grease

The story started slow but picked up speed in the middle.

Suspenseful.

Nella and Hazel are the main characters. Nella was so anxious to have a "Sister" working with her that she ignored all of the red flags.

Surprise ending.

Great writing but disappointing story

The book started out great. Harris is a wonderfully perceptive writer. However, the sub plot was silly and the story descended into a clunky sitcom 2/3 into the book. I really wanted to like it but I have to say it's over-hyped.

Still confused

I really wanted to like this book or even love it. I struggled while listening and struggled to finish. I am now finished and I still don't have clarity as to the storyline. Jumped around way too much and character development was not very strong.

Wow!

This is 1984 for the modern American publishing industry, left me with questions like any worthwhile science fiction.

A must read, turn this into a movie ASAP

I was really surprised about this book, so many twists and turns it was hard to put it down yet hit close to home so many times it felt like a gut punch towards the end, definitely loved listening to this story it was narrated very well! I wouldn't be surprised if they turn this book into a movie, I hope they do
