About this listen

Avery has just one chance to save her life - and the lives of her friends.

The king is very ill and in a hurry to hand over his power to a new generation when rumors begin to circulate through the kingdom. It appears the king is unaware of the queen's sinister plot against the 13-year-old orphans, as she wants to ensure her child becomes rightful heir to the throne.

Avery weighs the pros and cons of seeking an audience with the king while the castle is dealt a heavy blow; but Avery decides the risk is worth taking, and she steps out of the shadows for the first time since entering the castle walls.

When Avery is offered the opportunity of a lifetime, will she choose a life free from hardship within the castle walls...or her family and the home she left behind?

Exciting conclusion to a fun trilogy

Once again, I find myself at a loss for words since I don't want to be spoilery, but I'll do my best.

This trilogy as a whole was a 4 star read for me. Back when I was closer to the age of the main characters, I probably would have given it 5 stars. Just like with the previous two, I enjoyed the twists and turns of this final installment, and once again, it caught me by surprise a time or two.

My only real complaint was that I was a little unsure about the ending and even listened to the last few chapter of the audiobook twice just to be sure I understood what happened. It's nice that Avery was happy in the end but it still left me with some questions as to whether things could really be resolved in that manner with no future consequences? I guess it just felt like a "happy for now" ending, and while I don't mind those, it seemed to me like Avery was thinking a lot more about "right now" than potential consequences down the road. A realistic portrayal of adolescent thinking, I guess, but when one's life is changed as much as hers was, things don't just go back to the way they were, no questions asked. Maybe the authors were wanting to leave the door open for a possible future spin off or something, but even were I still a teenage reader, I don't know that this ending would have rung true for me any more than it does now. Still, it was a positive ending and didn't take away from my overall enjoyment of the series, so that's why I'm not lowering my rating any further.

I recommend this book and the trilogy as a whole for both teenage and adult readers who enjoy magic-free Christian fiction fantasy set in an alternate world.
