About this listen
Nine Step-by-Step Sessions for "Waking Down"
How can we discover this perfect, somatic knowing? It begins by removing the blockages that manifest mentally, emotionally, and physically. Join Reggie Ray as he presents the practice of pure awareness in nine guided, sequential sessions that lead to the direct experience of our true nature.
Emphasizing deep relaxation, the power in the lower belly, opening the central channel, and the significance of posture, Reggie helps us unfold ever-subtler realizations of our capacities to love and heal. Through yin breathing, earth descent, 12-fold lower belly breathing, and more, we journey through the channels of the subtle body, releasing old traumas and stuck energy. "Through these meditations," says Reggie, "our true selves begin to flower. We discover that in essence we are a river, a torrent, of love."
The Practice of Pure Awareness invites us into embodied awakening - a fuller and richer experience than the more arid or "above the neck" states of consciousness we find in many conventional spiritual approaches. Through committed practice, the body itself becomes our guide, teacher, and protector, illuminating the perfection inside and around us.

In his third book, Tantric philosopher and Oxford scholar Dr. Christopher Wallis calls out the seemingly helpful spiritual platitudes dominating our current culture and demonstrates how these "near-truths" can stand in the way of a more radically free and meaningful life—and ultimately, a deeper spiritual awakening. Rooted in the Asian wisdom traditions, Wallis’s book uncovers why these oft-heard clichés are “near enemies of the truth" that can distract us from real spirituality, and can even cause unnecessary suffering.

Story
Jay Garfield, a leading expert on Buddhist philosophy, offers a brief and radically clear account of an idea that at first might seem frightening but that promises to liberate us and improve our lives, our relationships, and the world. Drawing on Indian and East Asian Buddhism, Daoism, Western philosophy, and cognitive neuroscience, Garfield shows why it is perfectly natural to think you have a self—and why it actually makes no sense at all and is even dangerous. Most importantly, he explains why shedding the illusion that you have a self can make you a better person.

Story
Legend has it that more than a thousand years ago an Indian Buddhist monk named Bodhidharma arrived in China. His approach to teaching was unlike that of any of the Buddhist missionaries who had come to China before him. He confounded the emperor with cryptic dialogues, traveled the country, lived in a cave in the mountains, and eventually paved the way for a unique and illuminating approach to Buddhist teachings that would later spread across the whole of East Asia in the form of Chan—later to be known as Seon in Korean, Thien in Vietnamese, and Zen in Japanese.

Reverse Meditation is for anyone who wants to bring the challenges of life onto the path of awakening. When things get hard, it’s time to turn your practice on its head—and throw out any assumption that meditation exists to insulate you from the confusion, difficulties, and uncertainty of life. “By putting your meditation into reverse,” Holecek teaches, “you’ll actually find yourself going forward. Step into your pain and you can step up your evolution.”

As much as we might try to resist, endings happen in every moment—the end of a breath, the end of a day, the end of a relationship, and ultimately the end of life. And accompanying each ending is a beginning, though it may be unclear what the beginning holds. In How We Live Is How We Die, Pema Chödrön shares her wisdom for working with this flow of life—learning to live with ease, joy, and compassion through uncertainty, embracing new beginnings, and ultimately preparing for death with curiosity and openness rather than fear.

What would be the practical implications of caring more about others than about yourself? This is the radical theme of this extraordinary set of instructions, a training manual composed in the fourteenth century by the Buddhist hermit Ngulchu Thogme, here explained in detail by one of the great Tibetan Buddhist masters of the twentieth century, Dilgo Khyentse. In the Mahayana tradition, those who have the courage to undertake the profound change of attitude required to develop true compassion are called bodhisattvas.

Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Story
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

With his expert teachings, philosophical insights, and pragmatic imagery, world-class yoga instructor Tias Little turns the anatomy of the physical body into a tool for navigating the subtle body. If you spend considerable time doing yoga, you begin to see that it is about much more than just the body - the practice of yoga in fact reveals that the body is in no way separate from the pyschospiritual forces that animate it. Tias Little here provides a way to understand these forces as they relate to an integrated yoga of body, mind, and spirit.

For the Seeker
Would you listen to The Practice of Pure Awareness again? Why?
Yes over and over to reinforce the somatic meditation.
What other book might you compare The Practice of Pure Awareness to and why?
Other books come close to trying to get you to pure awareness in a top down manner from the mind, but some people including me this does not work as well as using the body to reach pure awareness
Which character – as performed by Reginald A. Ray – was your favorite?
He instructs the meditation and explains the philosophy behind it.
Any additional comments?
If you are a serious seeker for enlightenment this is a must the narrators voice is monotone but found this conducive to getting in the right zone for meditation.

A slowing down Olof mind and body
Wow! This is a very specific Soma meditation. Building in layers through the book to a 40 minute meditation. Regis speaks slowly and methodically. Great practice for fine tuning the chakras and central channel.

A series of great lessons
Every few years I pick on a book by Regional A. Ray and go through the lessons. They are very in-depth and can bring up some very intense stuff! The first time it took me a year to get through the first book. This time I got through the book in 6 months, but the lessons are only beginning! Heed authors warnings as you go through each lesson! Trust me things will come up and you need to be prepared!

practical, deep, full of loving mindfulness.
I've been meditating since 2005. This is an excellent book for beginners or long-time meditators. The vibration of the teacher's voice carries through the entire audio program to encourage and Inspire the meditator. The practical and metaphysical wisdom of the teachings combined with the delivery of the guided meditations can provide very helpful insight to anyone that truly is seeking their own inner wisdom. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Exceptional knowledge and presentation
As a Shaman I have been trained to traverse the upper and lower worlds and the dimensions on this plane. But now in a Buddhist Monastery in Burma studying Vipassana Buddhism, I was both overwhelmed and delighted to learn about the treasures within. Dr Ray's presentation provided me with a deep understanding of the journey within and I continue to employ his teachings on a daily basis.
