About this listen
“As to methods there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. The man who grasps principles can successfully select his own methods. The man who tries methods, ignoring principles, is sure to have trouble.” - Harrington Emerson
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of training decisions to be made when working with a horse? Should you speed up, slow down, turn left, turn right? What transition should you make next? Which body part should you move where?
What if you didn’t need to memorize a million techniques and scenarios, but just needed to understand the principles at play in each situation?

Throughout, true stories of horses and handlers attempting to understand each other—sometimes successfully, sometimes not—help to illustrate the principles.

In the horse industry, working students aspire to become professional riders or trainers, and willingly trade labor for hands-on education.

Did you know there is an area of your brain known as the "Lizard Brain" that thinks only about the immediate moment and your means of survival? Yes, in certain circumstances, your "Rational Brain" can effectively "shut down" and you are at the mercy of a reptile... dry-mouthed, sweating, queasy, unable to think clearly - even though you know better. When does the Lizard Brain run the show? It can happen in any number of unfamiliar, uncomfortable, challenging, or "stressful" riding situations. But here's the thing: with the right kind of training, you can learn to manage the reptile within.

Story
This is what happens when a writer, preacher, and lover of words encounters some of creation’s wisest theologians: horses. First, she argues with them. They are, after all, horses. What could they possibly know about life and God that theologians haven’t already written? But slowly, she engages their language and listens to their holy wisdom, attending to how they express their being, actions, and relationships. She allows horses to draw her out of the faith of intellect and into a deeper faith of emotion, body, and soul.

Story
Derick Lugo had never been hiking. He certainly couldn't imagine going more than a day without manicuring his goatee. But with a job cut short and no immediate plans, this fixture of the New York comedy scene began to think about what he might do with months of free time. He had heard of the Appalachian Trail, but he had never seriously considered attempting to hike all 2,184.2 miles of it. Suddenly he found himself asking, Could he do it?

In Wildlife Wars, Terry Grosz serves up fascinating stories - alternately hair-raising, hilarious, and heart-wrenching - from his 30-year struggle to protect wildlife in America. A natural storyteller, Grosz writes about the remarkable characters he met - on both sides of the law - as he matched wits with elk poachers, salmon snaggers, commercial-market duck hunters, and a host of other law-breakers. Best of all, though, these stories are so remarkably entertaining you won't want to put them down.

As he watched a mare tame a rebellious colt, Monty saw that she was speaking to it through eye and body movements. Astonished, Monty realized that he could train horses by using their language, speaking to them in ways that would form trust and understanding. Good content, dislike virtual narration.
I liked the material of the book very much. But I absolutely did not like the virtual voice narration. The inflection and accent of the Voice was fine. lack the ability to understand how to pronounce various words based on the context of the sentence such as picking up a lead referring to how a horse travels and pronouncing it as lead metal. In future, I would much prefer live narrators.

This book is a Must for anyone who wants a better connection with horses!!
Warwicks principals are easy to follow and understand. After subscribing to his on line course, I was able to understand my horse much better and our connection became much stronger. I will listen to this book a few times, as I will get something different from it each time I hear it.
Loved being able to listen to this Fabulous book instead of actually reading it. I could drive, do housework, ect. The computer generated voice wasn’t half bad. There were a few hiccups, but overall I was impressed.
I’m truly Grateful for all of Warwicks insight and wisdom.
I would Highly recommend this book to any one wanting to have a better connection with horses!

Wonderful connection between the science of mammal behavior, the heart connection and the intention of energy!
What an excellent compilation of Warwick’s pillars of training and his open, conscious, and astute way of working with horses and their people.
As an experienced horse person and professional in the industry, I have gone through some very profound changes over the last several years. My mare brought me to this place, as if she was the divine intervention that I needed to catapult my changes in my relationship with my animals and it also led to changes in human relationships too. I have recommended this book to all my horse friends. I do agree with him, that his last chapter really should be the first chapter. But at the same time, it is quite poignant to be the last chapter…
