One thousand years ago in the valley of Kashmir, a great Tantric master named Ksemaraja wrote his masterpiece: the Pratyabhijna-hrdaya, which means "The Essence of the Recognition Philosophy" - recognition, that is, of oneself as a direct expression of the universal divine Consciousness. Recognition also that this Consciousness is, in truth, all that exists, and that its five fundamental powers of awareness, enjoyment, willing, knowing, and acting are the sacred endowments of every sentient being.
The Pratyabhijna-hrdaya was a concise primer, written to introduce spiritual seekers to the Recognition philosophy in less formally philosophical, more approachable language. What Ksemaraja created turned out to be one of the world's great spiritual masterpieces, breathtaking in its brevity but stunning in its power. It came to be considered equivalent to scripture itself by later generations, because of its undeniable inspiration.
One of the most powerful and revelatory spiritual masterpieces of world history, the Pratyabhijna-hrdaya is one of the primary sources for the study and practice of nondual Tantrik Yoga, and it has never been accurately translated or fully explained until now. Christopher Wallis, author of Tantra Illuminated: The Philosophy, History, and Practice of a Timeless Tradition, expounds the subtleties of this spiritual and philosophical classic.

However, The Recognition Sutras struck a chord in me and helped me to see my situation from a different angle. I began to reframe my life and circumstances and realized that despite all the hardships I’m going through, I’m somehow in a better place than I was before everything happened. In other words, my circumstances lead me to the spiritual path I’m on and connected me with people who have been nothing short of supportive.
In the book, Ksemaraja breaks down Recognition philosophy and gives various yuktis or actions one can take to deconstruct false views of reality, which we all have. He makes somewhat abstruse concepts about the nature of reality accessible and applicable to daily life. The texts also gives ways one can ‘digest’ and therefore assimilate and in a sense transmute traumatic emotions, which I found Challenging but life changing.
What I especially love about Ksemaraja’s work and tantrik philosophy in general is how it doesn’t assign blame or condemn people, no matter how lost many of us are in our mine constructed worlds. It helps one to lovingly assess one’s vikalpas or stories about life and help one to shift to seeing things sans a filter, where awareness is predominant and untainted by the mind’s stories. It feels like the original self love movement while also not letting us accept our screwed ‘stories’.
Hareesh’s translation is exquisite and his commentary is ( in my opinion) as valuable as the original text itself. I highly recommend reading Tantra Illuminated in addition to The Recognition Sutras as it gives a helpful, in depth yet not overwhelming overview of tantrick philosophy’s sects/sampradayas.
I truly hope more people discover this book and read it often. I own it in all formats and I’ve listened to the audiobook four times, especially before I meditate. I study the book daily and feel that every time I read it or listen to Hareesh’s narration, I marinate my mind in powerful thoughts about the nature of reality and where I/We fit into it. I feel less lost and more hopeful.
I honestly can’t wait for Hareesh to translate and publish more tantrik texts!
The most powerful book I’ve ever read
