Continues the series while keeping it fresh

Third in the Gentleman Bastard series this one explore the world of coning politics and theater. Events from the previous start to come together showing the bigger world, consequences of characters action and we finally see the main character's previous romance. Despite knowing the author would bring a surprise into the plot, the surprise he brings is still a shock and changes the flow.
If you like low level fantasy, character driven stories and rogues you should read this series.

Not as good as previous 2

Good book but read the middle part

The series is excellent and this book is no exception. However, the parts between, say 30% and 70% have been less good than the rest. I did not like the endless citations from a play you dont get to understand anyway.

Amazing however a little slow in the middle

The beginning is amazing but unfortunately drops off until the end again where it picks up. Still a very enjoyable listen and Micheal Page does an excellent job.

The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch

Would you consider the audio edition of The Republic of Thieves to be better than the print version?

The audio version has high quality production value, is easy to listen to and engrossing.

What other book might you compare The Republic of Thieves to and why?

The Republic of Thieves is a great third book following The Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas Under Red Skies. The links to the previous novels are clear and well crafted answering some of the questions set up earlier and posing even more. If I had to compare it to another work I would say it is of the same standard and style of The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, with more action more quickly.

What about Michael Page’s performance did you like?

Michael Page's voice is easy to listen to and the character portrayals are clear and well crafted. He lets the story do the talking which is the mark of a good performer.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I could not put the book down it drew me to listen on more often. It is a finely balanced book which hold both funny moments and moments that bring tears to your eyes. The characters are very well drawn especially if you have listened to the other novels in the series and the parallel story of the Republic of Thieves performance where we meet characters from previous stories serves to make the revelation at the end all the more intriguing.

The Republic of Thieves is a highly enjoyable, fast paced fantasy adventure romp. If you want to make the most of it I would recommend reading first The Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas under Red Skies. I'm looking forward to the next instalment.

The weakest instalment of the series. I just couldn't get into the story & found it tedious to finish the book.

Disappointing

I guess I expected too much from Lynch, but I feel certain that he didn't make as much of an effort this time around, either. The plot was just barely there and his characters aren't nearly as interesting, intelligent or charming as he would like to think, not enough to carry the slim premise of the book, in any case. To be sure, it was basically an excuse to delve into the history of the characters and introduce a certain someone who's been missing from the series (and who's been referenced on more than one occasion). And despite an entire book to do so, Lynch flailed and came up with nothing at the end. Just like the antagonists, every character besides Locke acts as a counterpoint to his. Locke is the only one who has any semblance of consistency or personal growth. On the point of antagonists, Lynch has always had to contrive a thoroughly convoluted way of involving them with Locke's story, this time around the complications remain but the reasoning just doesn't add up. I kept thinking, but why? Then when Lynch would explain a little bit more further on, I'd still be wondering why someone would go through all that trouble... like why? Usually, I can forgive or even forget these little mishaps because the story is so engrossing and the worldbuilding fantastic. But Lynch has hit with The Republic of Thieves. He didn't add anything new or anything that was sufficiently interesting to make someone want to read on. And the ending was supposed to be a cliffhanger (I think?) but all it did was make me begrudge Lynch: "Really? This was the big twist? Really? Oh and why did [ ] do that? That makes no sense! [ ] is supposed to be better than that!!"
I really, really wanted to like this book, but in the end I was just exhausted from waiting for something interesting or surprising to happen. I finished the book at night, turned off the lights and immediately went to sleep. It didn't make me buzz with excitement or awe, it was just something I had to get over so that I could focus on another book.
I would not recommend this for anyone who is not already obsessed with Lynch's world or who has very high expectations and was slightly disappointed by Red Seas Under Red Skies (which was good, don't get me wrong). Read a summary if you're curious. Save yourself the time and the money.
In its defense, I will say that the interludes were pretty cute and did a better job of entertaining me than the main story line. The task to which The Gentlemen Bastards are appointed to at first seemed a bit dull and slow-going for me, but once I got into it, I was able to appreciate the labor Lynch put into building up that story within the story of the book.

Thoroughly enjoyable, clever and well presented

An outstanding series. well written, clever plot, with believable characters.

Another great performance by Michael, always a pleasure to hear clear diction, correct pronunciations and varied voices.

More please!
