About this listen

“The powerful origin story of one of Yellowstone’s greatest and most famous wolves.” (Washington Post)

Book one in the Alpha Wolves of Yellowstone series.

Book two, The Reign of Wolf 21, is available now.

Yellowstone National Park was once home to an abundance of wild wolves - but park rangers killed the last of their kind in the 1920s. Decades later, the rangers brought them back, with the first wolves arriving from Canada in 1995.

This is the incredible true story of one of those wolves.

Wolf 8 struggles at first - he is smaller than the other pups and often bullied - but soon, he bonds with an alpha female whose mate was shot. An unusually young alpha male, barely a teenager in human years, Wolf 8 rises to the occasion, hunting skillfully, and even defending his family from the wolf who killed his father. But soon he faces a new opponent: his adopted son, who mates with a violent alpha female. Can Wolf 8 protect his valley without harming his protégé?

“[The Rise of Wolf 8] is a goldmine for information on all aspects of wolf behavior and clearly shows they are clever, smart, and emotional beings.” (Marc Bekoff, Psychology Today)

The magic and nature of wolves.

This book will educate, excite, confound and tell you the story of wolf families as they are literally seen through the eyes of Rick McIntyre. He has recorded their remarkable family ties, kindness, tenacious survival skills and contribution to nature. So much more than a wolf journal. Riveting!

Relating to Wolves

Rick has a unique perspective from observing several wolf packs over the years. He saw family loyalty, playfulness, group feeding the young and how they tracked one another through smell.

Tells the story of a wolf and his family in human terms

For folks who follow the yellowstone wolf community, Rick McIntyre is an icon. I first heard of him while reading the book “American wolf.” His wealth of observation and recordkeeping is incredibly valuable, and this book is a small slice of that… Specifically how it relates to Wolf 8. He tells his story with personification and metaphor in a way that connects human beings to wolves so that we can effectively relate to them and their lives. The performance of narration is cut and spliced quite a bit. The recordings sound different so that it almost seems like two different people speaking when audio is spliced. Just a minor irritant to an excellent read.

The incredible level of detail, passion and perseverance of the author.

Science based books can be dry and repetitive but I think Rick did an excellent job of explaining and entertaining the reader.

Great story, reader was robotic

I picked this book up on a trip to Yellowstone and downloaded the audiobook as a companion when I couldn’t read the bill.

Great story, but the narrator made it dry on audio. Preferred the book.

Great story told in the best way.

I loved the story of the underdog growing to become a brave and great alpha in the Rose Creek Pack. In addition the story was told perfectly by the narrator.

Remarkable

Truly amazing story. I am convinced reading or listening to this book will make you a better human being. This, thanks to the Wolf. And in this case an amazing Wolf known only as 8.
