T. Lobsang Rampa
About this listen
High in the rarefied air of the Himalayas stands the great Lamasery of Potala. Here, as a young boy, T. Lobsang Rampa came to study the teachings of the Lord Buddha.
Through the eyes of this young acolyte, we learn of the life of Prince Gautama and his discovery of the Middle Way, the Four Noble Truths, and the state of Nirvana.
Those who have heard of Lobsang Rampa's experiences in the lamaseries of Tibet will be greatly moved by this personal story of the transition of a daring, sometimes disobedient, youth into a serious, deep-thinking young man possessing quite exceptional sensory abilities.

Story
T. Lobsang Rampa was preordained to be a Tibetan priest, a sign from the stars that could not be ignored. When he left his wealthy home to enter the monastery, his heart was filled with trepidation, with only a slight knowledge of the rigorous spiritual training and physical ordeal that awaited him. This is his story, a hauntingly beautiful and deeply inspiring journey of awakening within Chakpori Lamasery, the temple of Tibetan medicine.

According to Barker, who first published the book in the 1960s, Rampa's claim that his body had been taken over by a Tibetan Buddhist monk was in no way disproved. In fact, Barker provides a letter from a Tibetan Buddhist scholar stating that Rampa's writings about the inner workings of Tibetan Buddhism were quite accurate and actually revealed closely guarded secrets of the Himalayan monasteries.

Udo's biggest problem isn't being a digger (that's low class), or staying drunk (that's damn expensive), or avoiding the Dwergaz (they're monsters), or even pissing off the supposed Gods. It's that his reality...well, it isn't what he thought. And now, he can't even afford to drink because his so-called friend Nicz is cutting into his business, digging up tin, iron, and copper. So Udo forms a new plan: clay. After all, clay jars are used to store everything: meat, herbs, and, his personal favorite, ale.

Story
In the post-apocalyptic, neo-medieval city of Ark, speech is constrained to 500 sanctioned words. If somewhere were to speak outside that approved lexicon, they'd face banishment. The only exceptions to this rule are the Wordsmith and his apprentice, Letta. Together, they are the keepers and archivists of all language. But when Letta's master dies, she is suddenly promoted to Wordsmith and finds the situation more complicated than she knew.

Hot on the heels of Gardner Dozois's acclaimed anthology The Book of Swords comes this companion volume devoted to magic. How could it be otherwise? For every Frodo, there is a Gandalf... and a Saruman. For every Dorothy, a Glinda... and a Wicked Witch of the West. What would Harry Potter be without Albus Dumbledore... and Severus Snape? Figures of wisdom and power, possessing arcane, often forbidden knowledge, wizards and sorcerers are shaped - or misshaped - by the potent magic they seek to wield.

Story
Dean Jocelin has a vision: that God has chosen him to erect a great spire on his cathedral. His mason anxiously advises against it, for the old cathedral was built without foundations. Nevertheless, the spire rises octagon upon octagon, pinnacle by pinnacle, until the stone pillars shriek and the ground beneath it swims. Its shadow falls ever darker on the world below, and on Dean Jocelin in particular. From the author of Lord of the Flies, The Spire is a dark and powerful portrait of one man's will, and the folly that he creates.

Beautifully told with moral human tales woven in
This reflection on T. Lobsang Rampa's childhood as a young monk in training was a more gentle experience than his first three books where he dealt with a lot of cruelty as an adult after he left Tibet. As a boy he was a bit of a rascal and a few of those stories were included too with some humor at his expense. His observations of the people around him and their motivations are enjoyable. The metaphysical abilities he was learning about and the OBE experience he shared was very interesting. Above all, the detailed descriptions of Tibet, even of minor lifestyle behaviors gave an armchair traveler's experience. To share not only broad landscape visuals but even close up visual details, sounds, scents, and textures made this book almost a sensory experience at times.

Narrator ruins it
Narrator has a gnarly lisp or something. The way he emphasizes “S” is audibly unbearable. My ears physically hurt
