About this listen

It's been seven years since the Seattle Strangler terrorized the city. His victims were all young, pretty, their lifeless bodies found wrapped in a home-sewn white dress. But there was one who miraculously escaped death, just before the Strangler disappeared.

Lara Church has only hazy memories of her long-ago attack. What she does have is a home in Austin, a job, and a chance at a normal life at last. Then Texas Ranger James Beck arrives on her doorstep with shattering news: The Strangler is back. And this time, he's in Austin.

He's always craved her, even as he killed the others. For so long he's been waiting to unleash the beast within. And this time, he'll prove he holds her life in his hands - right before he ends it forever....

Great Story with Great Narrator!

Very entertaining with plenty of suspense! The story kept me listening anxiously all the way through, anticipating what would happen next. And when you think you have it figured out, events occur to make you reconsider. Purchased when I saw Johanna Parker narrated. She's one of my top favorites and she does a wonderful job!

REALLY AWESOME!!!

This was one of the most enjoyable Serial Killer Thrillers. that I have read. The narration is great , and the Author, Mary Burton, did a spectacular and intriguing job of creating tension, crafting characters, blending in twists, and bringing them all together in a climax stretched with a wonderfully sensual pause. I look forward to listening to more Mary Burton books!!!

Narration felt rushed

I really like this author and listen to audible books on a regular basis. The narration was very fast. I noticed right away and couldn’t get into the book like usually due to how fast she was reading. Tried to use the app to slow the pace and that slowed it down too much. No happy medium.

All but narrator

Great story, well written but the narrator was a challenge. She did great with conversations but the rest was her seeming to hurry through with the same cadence in every sentence. This made it hard for me. I felt like she was trying to finish as fast as she could.

Predictable

I enjoyed listening to this book. However, it was way too predictable. Needed some more plot twists and left me feeling a bit flat at the end .

Could have been great, missed the bar with inappropriately timed content.

I really enjoyed the overall storyline and writing style, with a couple very notable (and ultimately damning) exceptions.
First is how the main male character is written interacting with a violent crime/SA survivor. I almost put the book down because of the gross way he stalked and physically/deliberately intimidated her, but I pressed on, hoping for improvement. It improved enough that I made it almost to the end.

Some Spoilers ahead.
I've finally put this down for good with an hour left to go. Won't be finishing it. I wish books would come with a warning when they contain full fledged sex scenes. Not only was that scene bizarrely placed and incredibly illogical, it turned me off of the book and any future books entirely. Was hoping it would at least fade to black, but it kept on going, so I shut it off. That was the nail in the coffin for me.
SA trauma isn't something someone just randomly decides they are 'now over'. Especially not mere hours after a near repeat of their trauma from the same person, and first time full rememberance of repressed memories and sensations. While the bruises on their body from the repeat attack are still forming. Absolutely not. Yucky.

Wanted to like it. Not for me.

Little predictable but good

it was pretty predictable but did have a bit of a twist at the very end. Over all it was a good story. Narrator was decent too.

Only a couple of discrepancies, especially being a Texan and a LEO wife of a DPS officer. 1. Once a crime scene is processed and no longer being investigated AND it's public property, you CANNOT threaten to arrest someone if they are doing no wrong just because you don't want them there. 2. It is NOT against the law in Texas to posses a weapon if you have no criminal record. You don't even have to tell them you have one (in your hotel) if the cops aren't even entering on official business. Bit mostly, because he was a private PI and ran a security company his license from another state would be acceptable here, even at the time this book was published.

Be a good author and do a little research on law details like that. Details are what make a book.

Killer’s identity

It was not seamless as in one event to another, felt like pieces were missing
