The Roman gladiator has long been a figure of fascination. Portrayed frequently in fine art and popular culture alike, the gladiator is both a real part of history and a legend of a romanticized past. We know that these men entertained Roman audiences by fighting in dangerous and often deadly games. But who were the gladiators? What were their lives like? And why do they continue to have such a strong hold on our imagination, centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire?

Story
In 1992, the deadliest year in Chicago’s history, seven-year-old Dantrell Davis was shot and killed in front of his elementary school inside the public housing complex Cabrini-Green. What happened to Dantrell led to a truce among Chicago’s gangs, but it also ignited a national panic about poverty and violence in America’s cities. Dantrell’s name would soon be used to demolish all of Chicago’s high-rise public housing, displacing tens of thousands of low-income families.

Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

A Masterful Dive into History’s Dark Corners
This audiobook brilliantly uncovers the layers of Mary Rogers’ unsolved murder, transporting listeners to the gritty streets of 19th-century New York. I was captivated by the way it explored not just the crime, but the societal forces—like sensationalist journalism and the struggles faced by women—that shaped the case. The narration was haunting and immersive, perfectly complementing the story’s dark tone. The balance of historical detail and cultural insight kept me hooked from start to finish. A must-listen for anyone intrigued by history’s enduring mysteries.

really thrilling
I’m obsessed with well-told true crime, and The Silent Witness checked all the boxes. This audiobook brings the unsolved murder of Mary Rogers to life with haunting detail and sharp storytelling. The historical backdrop adds layers to the mystery; I learned so much about 1840s New York while piecing together the clues. The narrator’s performance is spot-on, capturing the eerie tone perfectly. It felt like I was uncovering secrets right alongside the storyteller. It’s both educational and thrilling; something I don’t find often. Whether you’re into history, crime, or just a good mystery, this one’s a no-brainer

Mary Rogers
I really like true crime stories. I grew up listening to Paul Harvey’s The Rest of the Story and watching Unsolved Mysteries. I envisioned the book would go along those lines. It starts off well. I found the topic to be interesting, the unsolved murder of Mary Rogers. It is clear the author did excellent research into the crime and the time period, to provide a compelling story. However, the book quickly became repetitive and drawn out. If it was well edited to eliminate repetition, the book would be significantly shorter, and more enjoyable.
