About this listen
Hermann Kermit Warm is going to die. The enigmatic and powerful man known only as the Commodore has ordered it, and his henchmen, Eli and Charlie Sisters, will make sure of it. Though Eli doesn't share his brother's appetite for whiskey and killing, he's never known anything else. But their prey isn't an easy mark, and on the road from Oregon City to Warm's gold-mining claim outside Sacramento, Eli begins to question what he does for a living–and whom he does it for.
With The Sisters Brothers, Patrick deWitt pays homage to the classic Western, transforming it into an unforgettable comic tour de force. Filled with a remarkable cast of characters–losers, cheaters, and ne'er-do-wells from all stripes of life–and told by a complex and compelling narrator, it is a violent, lustful odyssey through the underworld of the 1850s frontier that beautifully captures the humor, melancholy, and grit of the Old West and two brothers bound by blood, violence, and love.

Story
Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed "Rooster" Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie, as vital as she is innocent, outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

Story
Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality: the black Chinese restaurant.

Story
The legendary Deep Thoughts and New Yorker humorist Jack Handey is back with his very first novel - a hilarious, absurd, far-flung adventure tale. "Are you a fan of books in which famous tourist destinations are re-purposed as unlivable hellholes for no particular reason? Jack Handey's exotic tale is full of laugh-out-loud twists. A reliably unreliable narrator and his friend, who is some other guy, need to get out of town. They have a taste for adventure, so they pay a visit to a relic of bygone days - a travel agent - and discover an old treasure map."

Story
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Story
The year is 1878, peak of the Texas cattle trade. The place is Dodge City, Kansas, a saloon-filled cow town jammed with liquored-up adolescent cowboys and young Irish hookers. Violence is random and routine, but when the burned body of a mixed-blood boy named Johnnie Sanders is discovered, his death shocks a part-time policeman named Wyatt Earp. And it is a matter of strangely personal importance to Doc Holliday, the frail 26-year-old dentist who has just opened an office at No. 24, Dodge House.

Riding along the banks are the mercenaries hired to protect it - from raiders, bandits and, most of all, the stretchers, elf-like natives who kill any intruders into their territory. The mercenaries know this is dangerous, deadly work. But it is what they do. In the boat the drunk governor of the territories and his sons and daughters make merry. They believe that their status makes them untouchable.

Story
At the turn of the 20th century, in a rural stretch of the Pacific Northwest, a reclusive orchardist, William Talmadge, tends to apples and apricots as if they were loved ones. A gentle man, he's found solace in the sweetness of the fruit he grows and the quiet, beating heart of the land he cultivates. One day, two teenage girls appear and steal his fruit from the market; they later return to the outskirts of his orchard to see the man who gave them no chase. Feral, scared, and very pregnant, the girls take up on Talmadge's land and indulge in his deep reservoir of compassion.

Story
Marshal Shay McQuillan has a lot on his hands - stagecoach robbers to hunt down, a murdered fiancée to avenge. He certainly doesn't need an identical twin brother he never knew existed turning up out of the blue and telling him what to do. Even less does he want pretty Aislinn Lethaby trying to rescue him from danger. Because, to tell the truth, Aislinn is a sweet distraction from duty whom Shay just can't resist.

Robert Jackson Bennett makes a stunning debut with this deliciously dark tale sure to hold readers in its menacing thrall. The grinding poverty brought on by the Great Depression is nowhere more apparent than in the untold thousands looking for work along America’s railroad system. But one man haunting the rail camps has been moved by an entirely different brand of desperation: revenge.

A trip in to the Wild West
Would you consider the audio edition of The Sisters Brothers to be better than the print version?
Funny, and witty and wonderfully insightful. The story line was entertaining and left you guessing right to the very end. I've never rooted so hard for a bad guy.

unexpected but enjoyable.
If you could sum up The Sisters Brothers in three words, what would they be?
Unexpected. Surprising. Fascinating.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The narrator is my obvious choice. He is the younger brother, and a bit of a sheep sometimes, but the story told from his perspective is effective.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
This is an interesting question, because as I read this book, I had the thought that it felt like it could be a Quentin Tarantino film.
Any additional comments?
Western genres are not typically my genre, and it's only because the reviews that stated it 'was not your typical western' intrigued me. The characters were memorable for sure, and I did enjoy the book, although I'm not sure I'd read any more of this genre again.

Very peculiar story performed exceedingly well
I had previously read this book while on a trip through thailand, which as one might imagine provided for a thoroughly interesting atmosphere. Nonetheless I thought I would give it a listen, see what kind of narrative another took. I really must say the performance far exceeded my expectations and to an almost obscurely coincidental note matched the narrative I had developed in my mind while reading the book. Very interesting story and an even better performance.

Quite macabre
I enjoyed the narrator, I felt he added to the story but it was a strange unsatisfactory tale. Quote blood curdling in parts but also quite funny.

Great listen with a great performance.
Found this tale very intersting from start to finish, with the author producing good western gun slinging while still connecting you to the characters and the world they inhabited. And the narration is some of the best I've ever heard in a fiction book.

Solid western, not the best choice of narrator
Solid western. Narrator is fantastic at exposition but a bit weak on voices for the characters. This might sound picky but I felt it distracted from the nature of the characters when the dialogue is read. I think he'd be excellent for non-fiction but his performance of the dialogue feels half baked in that he goes for distinctive voices for different characters but delivers the same deadpan performance for them which seems to have maybe altered the tone of the book - but to be fair I'm saying that having not read it in print.
The book makes for good character studies and shows reverence for the genre while taking steps to bring something new to the table. Refreshing to read a relatively new entry in the genre.

Not my cup of tea
What disappointed you about The Sisters Brothers?
The story seemed to ramble. It seemed as though the author was trying to be "profound", but instead was in turns violent and boring.
Would you ever listen to anything by Patrick deWitt again?
If it is similar to this, no.
What about John Pruden’s performance did you like?
Narration was clear and precise. Too bad the script was not up to the narrator's skills.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I dreaded having to continue reading. Had to read it for a book club meeting, otherwise I would not have bothered finishing it.

I just don't get it.
I kept waiting to have a eureka moment while reading this book - wondering if, like when I read Lord of the Flies in high school, I had missed an underlying message.
After much book club discussion, I've decided I didn't miss anything - the book was just a miss for me - I still am not sure what I was meant to get out of it.
